As well you can go to the out/ and create a wren rop which will render a vector based hidden line like a mental ray contour render.
The line width is default at 2. It is very fast so I usually render at twice the resolution and sample down.
EDIT - As a note is will be the cusp angle in a facet sop that will control what angle the hidden line effect will have.

Better solution now with renderman:-)
Directly rendered in Houdini with a pxrvisualizer. Really smooth.
Have a look here for wireframe render:
https://renderman.pixar.com/resources/current/RenderMan/PxrVisualizer.html [renderman.pixar.com]
To get Subdivision in renderman:
https://renderman.pixar.com/resources/current/RenderMan/rfhSubdivision.html [renderman.pixar.com]
Right is Houdini viewport with “Display as Subdivision” on the “head”
