Hi there, playing with linux again… just installed 7.04 and am trying to run houdini on it. It seems to complete the install process but I cant get it to start.
when I do “source houdini_setup_bash” it tells me the “The Houdini 8.2.120 environment has been initialized” I then type houdini to get it started, but it doesnt, instead I get “bash: /opt/hfs8.2.120/bin/houdini: No such file or directory”
I had that problem to begin with and found/followed those instruction's, then I gave myself root privileges by typing “su” followed by the password, followed by the houdini install. The install goes ahead to completion afaik, I get all the install options etc.
Well I say the install completed because I can only assume that since I'm able to type “source houdini_setup_bash” and the terminal responds with “The Houdini 8.2.120 environment has been initialized” that it was indeed installed.
I dont understand what “bash: /opt/hfs8.2.120/bin/houdini: No such file or directory” means because the darn files and folders are where they should be.
I even rebooted and logged on as root to try and see if it was something to do with privileges, to no avail… same error message.
I had houdini running on 6.10 very painlessly a few months ago, after a LOT of fighting with installing nvidia drivers. Now I get the reverse, the nvidia driver installation is dead easy, but houdini is a pain.

That suggests your $PATH is somehow getting munged. Definitely not behaving properly - I'd consider that a workaround only. I still think it sounds like houdini_setup_bash isn't working properly for you.
I agree with John, somethings up with the install. I'm on ubuntu 7.04 and have no problems with installs, although periodically a particular build of houdini simply won't work.
You are using sudo when you run the installer, correct?
Other than that my installs are very simple.
If you have a license server working correctly you could also just extract the embedded houdini tar file and source and run houdini from there.
