Thanks for the replies, I do run Houdini on a workstation desktop but I also need to do remote work (mainly in dynamic simulation) other than the graphic cards, the hardware in workstation class laptop are not necesseraly that much better conpared to the high different in price… if Houdini can run on lower card specs, like let's say an ati mobility HD 4570 it's a huge saving in cost…

Hi, is there a list of ‘' optimal combination’' for both the rigidbody solver and RB properties to get efficiency/speed/accuracy balance?
the help file explain every setting one at the time but not the impact that one may have on another…
thanks

I had the complete opposite happening… my first station to run Houdini was a quad core, 4g ram and XP32, simulations were running out of memory pretty fast even with low count of rigid bodies, I then got a second station with the same configuration but running XP64, everything is fine since, much faster and even if I start overnight simulations, it will not crash out of memory when I get back to it the next day…

Hi, looking at your movie, how did you go about creating the fracture that advances on the floor? is the pieces keyframed or are you using deformer objects?
thanks

are you using XP64? In one of your post you mention a 8hrs simulation time, I crash out after about 500 frames with a simple 60 RBD simulation… and the .fbx export with point cache crashes even if I try to export a single RBD… your simulation seem quite large, what's the .fbx you are using to export?
thanks

Technical Discussion » interact the keyframe animation and dynamics animation??

you can turn off the ‘'Active’' property in your RBD that is keyframed, that will keep its animation going in the DOP and it will interact with your active RBD that is fully dynamic.

same situation happening here on win32… getting memory crashes with straight foward RBD simulation, very basic ones, like 60 RBD on a thousand frame, it will crash while computing sim after about 500 frames and even with the file node enabled and writting sim to disk, with fully computed sim in cache it crashes everytime when trying to export a .fbx of it… would going to win64 fix these issues? (quad xeon 2.2, 4G of ram)

Howsome stuff… I see that you use Rayfire, are you exporting these simulation back into max afterwards? I'm currently having a lot of memory issues with exporting back through .fbx and looking for any tip
thanks

Hi I'm running the latest version of Houdini on win32, I have quad xeon 2.2 and 4G or ram, however when trying to export RBD simulation to .fbx the program will crash with a out of memory message, I'm writting sim to disk via the file node and storing simdata as well… is there anybody out there that stumbled onto the same issue and found a way to fix it? the sim I'm trying to export are not that heavy, like 60 low rez RBD on a thousand frame or so.
Also the cache manager only shows a 20-30% usage of the cache so I'm at loss to find the problem/solution
thanks in advance for any help

Hi
I'm using the file DOP, plugged into the gravity, but for some reason no file gets created in the specified location, ie; $Hip/data.$SF4.sim will not create a .sim file, the same for collision with *.simdata works ok on the object level… any idea what I'm doing wrong? is this feature supposed to work in apprentice?
thanks!
