Houdini Lounge » Is hserver launching automatically? How do I stop it?

Hi, I haven't used Houdini in a long while, but I notice that when I check my Task Manager, every once in a while hserver.exe (more specifically, the process “HoudiniServer”) will be running. Is it launching on startup automatically, or even just starting on its own after a set period of time? How do I stop this if this is the case?

You have alright English, I could understand you just fine
I didn't understand one thing though, how does disabling hserver's automatic run affect using the actual program?

I'm not as tech savvy as I'd like to think, what exactly does disabling services.msc do?

Using Windows 10. I'm not paranoid about SideFX selling my data or anything like that, but I'm a real control freak when it comes to technology and I like having absolute dominion over everything on my machines. I already get super itchy whenever I see something like three Cortana processes running on my Task Manager, so is there a way to stop things like “hserver” from running while I'm not using Houdini?

I'd like to have an infinite plane to do test renders on where the horizon is visible. I haven't found anything online, but apparently it is possible in other softwares so is it possible in Houdini?

This probably won't do anything, but it's still worth a shot: try updating your version of H or renewing your license

I'd like to make a semitransparent shader with the principled shader in mantra that looks like the one above, which was made in C4D/Arnold. I've been trying everything I could think of but I just can't seem to get it right! Anyone have any ideas?

I could've sworn that Launch as Admin didn't make a difference but I just tried it now and it works perfectly However it's now telling me my account doesn't exist when trying to install new licenses, hm :0

I've continued to have problems with hkey, it's still giving me error “Cannot modify the license file” and the option to manually enter license codes is greyed out. This seems to have happened with every one of my installations of Houdini, is there some setting in my system that I need to change to prevent this from happening?

All is in the title, I went to licenses.local and I changed permissions all the way up to “Full Control” for all applications. I've even given hkey permission to modify the entire “keys” folder and yet it still refuses to function, preventing me from exporting anything from MPlay. All my licenses are valid and functional. Have I misunderstood something or is this a bug? I've had this problem before for quite a while but I didn't know it then.

Thank you all for your responses! They were very helpful. I think Scott Pagano's “Houdini Essential Training” looked awesome but I am no longer willing to sign up for free trials on paid websites because LinkedIn has caused me terrible problems immediately after creating an account. Do any of you know whether Lynda requires a credit card number or not for viewing courses on free trial?

Aw phooey, you were right
Some disturbing results but nonetheless exactly what I wanted. Now only to figure out why he's got those stripy reflections…

Ah well. I feel a bit guilty because I've been cluttering up the forums with newbie questions without being able to contribute to discussion in return! It's silly but that's how I roll sometimes
Alright, I'll try more experiments with the Rubber Toy this time, and return with results later.
Wouldn't transparency roughness be SSS?

Hi all, sorry for all the optics-related questions lately
I am attempting to create a shader that looks similar to “gummy worm” candies, where the object is transparent at the thin areas and colored more and more as the object gets thicker, like in this clip by Trashbin [www.instagram.com]
I've been experimenting with the At Distance settings for transmission color (red) in the Principled Shader. My intuition was that because the distance across a sphere is a lot thicker than anywhere else on the sphere, using At Distance with a relatively high value would make it so that the center of the sphere would be the most red and would get gradually more and more desaturated and eventually transparent towards the edge. However I have only been able to change the saturation for the entire sphere with At Distance.
Am I misunderstanding how Mantra/Principled Shader handles transparent objects? Or do I misunderstand optics altogether and my initial hunch of having to use SSS correct?

I'm having the same problem! (but to a lesser extent) It seems that the export gamma is by default 1 when it should be 2.2 if I remember correctly. I don't know about the antialiasing though, sorry
