How can I modify the points of a curve without changing the length of the curve? There is a digital asset, called Curve Control to control the shape of a curve but it modifies the length.

I have been proving some software to do hair. And I have seen that the function COMB in others programs it works different that in Houdini. I Houdini I can control the growing hair with COMB but in other programs I can edit long hair. For example in Blender the comb function act like this. In XSI, Cinema3D, JoeAlter it is very similar to Blender too.

Which way is the equivalent in Houdini to do the same?

When I reduce the model I get a triangulated model (something similar to the left sphere). Is it possible to get a reduced polygonal model with a nice layout of polygons in rows and columns like the sphere of the right?

In maya you can snapt points to an polygonal, nurbs or subdivision model. For do this you can select the icon “Make the selected object live” or select the reference model and go to Modify -> Make live. How I can do the same with Houdini??
Technical Discussion » what is the difference between polygonal an mesh?

I am sorry for this “basic” question. But when I choose the type of one primitive I can choose between polygonal and mesh, and I always thought that they mean the same.
Technical Discussion » linux vs windows rendering

When I have read about linux versus windows, always linux fans said that linux is better than windows. But I don't be sure and I want to verify it. Well I have installed in one of my computers Windows XP 64bits and Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.1 64bits. I have render the scene "Renderpass Workflow" (it is in the web tutorial files), with the default resolution and the default command render. And the result is that linux is 18% faster than windows (in rendering), at least in my computer and with my configuration. Perharps in other computers… I don't know.
Windows XP64 Professional: 308 seconds
Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.1: 261 seconds.
After this test I will never use a version windows of any aplication when a linux version exists.
(My computer have AMD Athlon 3800 X2, 2Gb RAM, nvidia 7800 256Mb, motherboard Gigabyte k8n 9 ultra, etc, etc.)

In Houdini is easy to show the numbers of all the vertex of a cube. But I don't want to display numbers, I want to display only one word (for example, “koala”) and only in one vertex. How I get it?

The service sesinetd don't autostart. The solution that I have found is to init manually sesi. Every time that I restart linux I write this line in a terminal:
cd /usr/lib/sesi; ./sesinetd; cd /opt/hfs8.2.13/; source houdini_setup_bash; cd bin; ./hmaster
For me it works.
cd /usr/lib/sesi; ./sesinetd; cd /opt/hfs8.2.13/; source houdini_setup_bash; cd bin; ./hmaster
For me it works.

Sesi goes ok (if I reinstall it every time I restart the computer) . And Houdini works. The permissions are correct (as root). And I think that nothing is changing the permissions. Don't worry. Surely I will install Mandriva. I only ask this problem because it is curios.

I have installed Houdini in Sabayon miniEd. Houdini runs with the issues of DaJuice. But I have a new problem: I have to reinstall sesinetd.install every time that I restart my computer.
I have installed Houdini in others linux (Fedora Core 4 and 64studio) and I didn't need to reinstall the sesinetd.
Any suggestion?

I am new in Houdini and … I was working with a full hair that I had done with Maya. I have seen examples of guides and rest nodes that you and others had post in the forum. It is very interesting. I am going to study it with more detail. Thanks.

This is a basic question of modeling with NURBS curves, but I need it to know to make hair.
“Comb SOP” permits to do a nice short hair. When I are interested in long hair I use “spring SOP”. But that long hair is very basic. I want to add detail to that long hair and I don't know how to do it. In MAYA one possibility is to use a “radial field” to add detail. But in Houdini what ways are there?

I am trying to make hair in Houdini. I have one problem. When I apply the spring SOP to the hair curves the Houdini goes very slow. I have some experience in hair with MAYA. In MAYA it is possible to decrease the “display quality” of the hair system and reduce the numbers of visible NURBS curves, without reducing the real number of curves. With this way you can modify the whole hair when you modify only a fewer curves. Is there a similar function or a another way in Houdini to work with hair more fast?
