Not really understanding how you can't learn from tutorials already out there. There is plenty of information to understand how things work. If you are looking for some pretty damn decent photo-realism this might work:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKqpvriKZuA [youtube.com]
That was all done in Houdini 9.5 and composited in Shake. Mantra has improved significantly since then. You also might want to check out 3D Buzz. The guy that made that video, Steve Twist work(ed) there and created a large series of tutorials that focus on technical aspects and Houdini in a much deeper manner than other tutorial sites. Check 'em out.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Digital Tutors, 3DBuzz: Worth It?

I'm still learning as I don't have as much time as I'd like to devote to Houdini 24/7, but I'm taking the necessary steps.
I've bought from Digital Tutors, CMI and 3DBuzz.
Digital Tutors is good for the basics and a general understanding. The instructor is clear and easy to understand.
CMI focuses on some more advanced things and is pretty good. My two downfalls for CMI are that the instructors are hard to understand for some of the series and you can't download any of the material (it's only streaming). I think this may be changing.
3DBuzz lays down an impeccable amount of detail and thought process behind how Houdini works. That is invaluable. Granted the projects aren't the most amazing, but it is hard to please everyone and the things they choose to do do cover a lot of bases and provide an excellent resource.

I suspect I a having the same issue… however this is a relatively brand new machine and I've only installed H11 on it and both times I get a UI with white squares where the icons should be.
Basically, it's telling me it can't find "/tmp/tools_***.png which I'm assuming is where the icons should be?!
Any ideas?

I've ried repeatedly to install H11 apprentice on this machine and I keep getting a fatal error upon start up that cause Houdini to lock up and require a force quit. Basically I can't do anything.
I have H10 installed on this machine and it is rock solid.
Anyone encounter this or perhaps have a reason? In the meantime I will try different Macs to see if problem is across the board.

@edward: looks like that worked on my home machine as well.
I also discovered there is a setting in the vopsurface shader called OGL Texture Layers. I added one and made it reference the diffuse map. Now, at least I can see the colors.
Very strange that there is no view mode in Houdini to see your textures properly in some sort of way by default.

I found the render View tab, but I have to make a ROP, I think, which isn't a big deal.
It is odd that SideFX is trying to gear Houdini more towards an artist's mentality (which mine is), but a lot is not done visually or as you say transparently.
I'm not sure how to do the OpenGl layers you are speaking of.
Hopefully there is a much easier way than that.

I'm having no luck finding a way to view my textures in the viewport. I've tried turning on Display textures in the Misc. tab under display options, projected textures.
Am I missing something?
Also, is there a way to do something like an IPR render? I want to adjust my shaders, lighting, etc. and see results without having to hit render everytime.
Sorry if this is somewhere else on the forum i tried searching for texture, viewport and combinations of the two, but I didn't see anything.
Thanks so much.
I am on a Mac, running Snow Leopard 10.6

@ Mattis:
A Dollar sign is made by hitting shift+4
Middle mouse button is not available by default, however, you can get this tool called “Better Touch Tool”. google it, download it and you can set up several different gestures or finger combination clicks to do different actions.
I use the three-finger click more middle-mouse button.

I'm sorry to bring up this old thread again, but I've searched the forum and found nothing about my problem:
How do I write a $ in a houdini expression in OS X, Snow Leopard with a MBP?
Also, is it possible to make equivalent to middle-mouse click in houdini?

Has anyone run across a good tutorial or know of a way to do page curls in Houdini?
I need to create a book, (hard back) that will open and then I can flip through the pages.
Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I second that. Or third or whatever number this thread is on. I'm currently researching using several applications to export collada meshes to be used for a proprietary system and WISH I could include Houdini in that evaluation list.
I'd certainly like to add Houdini to our pipeline as the ONE tool for all our content creation.

Hi all-
I'm doing some simple modeling, trying to understand Houdini and it seems like when I do simple things like revolve a curve or just add text it comes in reversed. I can make it correct by adding a reverse to it, but that doesn't seem to make sense to do it every time.
Am I doing something wrong? Could I have accidentally toggled something to make my geometry automatically reverse?

Hi everyone-
I'm starting a project that will invlove modeling a lot of gears and my challenge to myself is to do it all in Houdini.
In the past I would have probably individually modeled the gears and made a few variations, probably taking a lot of time.
My question is, using Houdini, might there be a way to create a digital asset that can build gears for me? Varying the gear teeth, holes in the gears, etc. I'm not very familiar with Digital Assets, so any information would be really helpful.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you.

Most of my objects when created have their normals in the right direction… facing the camera. However, when I create text the normals are inverted. I can't figure out how to change their directions?! I think there is a hotkey I stumbled upon while randomly hitting keys, but can't reproduce it.
A quick answer will be great.
Thank you.

I have the same issue. Usually happens one level below object level, when adding a node or attempting to access the drop down menu.
