Hi All,
I just worked through one of the Yancy FLIP tutorial on Vimeo.
https://vimeo.com/107373065 [vimeo.com]
The next step, for me, is to apply a material to each colored particles. I applied a simple Mantra Surface to the top level GEO object but when I render I still see only red and blue particles.
What is the trick to getting materials applied to a fluid surface?
EDIT:
I can follow up the DOPNET with an Attribute and delete Cd (which allows the mantra surface material to work) but then I lose the RED/BLUE color information and the result is a single color. I would like to route a different mantra surface material to the RED and BLUE information.

Ok, so I'll bite.
I am new to Houdini and still getting the hang of the terms.
Is cooking the same thing as a sim?
The reason I ask is that in my example and learning projects I find it is easy to make something that locks up the machine. I can no longer animate because every time I change the frame cooking occurs. I am on an 8 core machine but cooking only seems to use a single core.
Is there another way to bake/cook other than just playing the animation from the timeline?
How do I make Houdini use all the cores of my CPU?
Here is an example file [forums.odforce.net] that takes forever and will not playback on my i7 8 core with 16GB ram. I am stuck in an infinite cook loop.

I think the list changes depending upon your context but you can type a single $ into a text input field and a list will shortly appear with all variables available in that scope.

Isn't that the dreaded ‘.local’ error that Apple has introduced into our midst with their new Yosemite OSX? Basically they have added “.local” to user name validation and now many applications no longer work, not just Houdini.

What if you attached NULLS to the points that are moving then do an export FBX? Then when you get to Max you will have some basic transforms that you can use from the NULLs.

Have you tried a Trace node? Point it to the image. Then follow that up with a Points From Volume.

I have experienced Houdini getting “stuck” on Generating Scene. Have you tried just throwing away the Mantra node and creating a new one?

Thanks for the tips.
I did decide to go with a Windows based solution that does meet the system requirements. I have posted my machine specs in the signature. I am working on a Windows system that does meet the requirements.
It is like the display has two commands and is trying to execute them both..?

Hi All,
I have tracked an image sequence and I brought it in as a background image from the camera. This worked fine yesterday. I could scrub my timeline and the background image would update as expected.
I save my file and turn off the computer. The next day I open up the same exact file and the background image is all glitchy?
It appears that Houdini will only display the even frame numbers correctly. The odd frame numbers from my image sequence are displayed with some giant scale for some reason.
I was hoping to not have to constantly report bugs but here I am experiencing software failure.
Why would the same exact file on the same exact system fail to work the very next day?
I have attached images so you can see what I mean. The yellow stripe helps highlight the area of my background image that is being featured in the viewport. When I click the play button I am presented with a series of flickering images that alternate between correct and scaled too big.

Thanks Tom, that was it.
For new users, I'll just explain how to do what Tom mentions…
Select the Mantra node and in the properties activate Edit Parameter Interface, under the gear icon, for that node. You will see two columns with a bunch of properties in each column. In the left filter field near the bottom type ‘vm_gamma’. This is the non-exposed property that Tom mentions. I found it under Render/Output folder. Once I located it I dragged the property from the column on the left into the column on the right. You can move it up and down the stack to make it appear where you want in the property sheet. Once you drop it click Accept.
Now locate that property in the property sheet (which is generically named Gamma) and change it from 1.0 (linear) to 2.2 (non-linear). You also will have to set the Quantization to 8 bit Integer. Then pick a valid container type for your image, such as JPG or PNG.
That did for me. Now I can render to 8 bit PNG files.
Quite frankly I think the drop down, Infer From filename, should handle this behind the scenes. But it is nice that you can at least manually configure this.
I guess real professionals don't use 8-bit eh?

I did check that and my only output node was set to Gamma 2.2 for Color Space under the Shading TAB.
However, I was rendering to PNG files. When I switched to TIFF the lighting worked again. I guess there is some kind of bug in the PNG output. It seems to be related to using 8 bit integer as well. In other 3D programs I can render to an 8 bit JPG or PNG and the color is preserved. In Houdini this does not seem to be the case.
I am rendering a 1280x720 and getting files in the range 5MB per frame for TIFF while JPG is only 29K. A file size somewhere in between would be nice.

Hi All,
I have my scene setup and it looks great in the preview, however when I render to file the scene is all dark?
Does anyone know why this would happen?
In the image you can see my screen render and the preview from the file render.
I only have one mantra node in my output network.

Thanks, PolyWire did the trick. It gave me a radius I could lower to make a thin line.
I am seeing some normal shadowing on the ends of each line, however. Is there a technique for cleaning that up?
Also I have tried subdivide on the font node but I still have a fairly block font.

Doh, I used the icon that was on the desktop after the install. That icon happens to be linked to Apprentice, somehow.
I dug down into the Side Effects install folder and found the icon to launch Indie. Now I get full size renders…yeah!

Hi All,
I have purchased an Indie license and installed Houdini 13 from download. I have setup my licenses and the web page shows that they are registered to my machine name.
However, when I launch Houdini, the splash still says Non-Commercial and when I save I get .hipnc files instead of .hip file.
When I render I get no watermark, but I can not render larger than 768x431.
Does this sound like a messed up install? Or do I really have to wait seven days for “official” licenses to be delivered?
Any tips on getting full 1920x1080 renders out of Indie?

Hi All,
I have a scene that generates lines. I want to convert those lines into thin tubes.
What series of nodes would I use?
I thought I could just use a sweep with a circle, but that did not work?
I am attaching my scene and the screen shot has some highlight where I am trying to implement the lines to tubes.
The squared off white lines you see in the render are the graphic elements I am trying to turn into tubes (i.e. I want to make them thinner).
This scene is basically the tutorial found here:
