hi,
i think this variable doesnt need to be set.
I think it always will go look into $HOME/houdiniXX.X
if you want to add a custom path to scan you can edit the houdini.env in $HOME/houdiniXX.X
if you want to add a custom otl scan path you can add:
# Example:
#
#HOUDINI_NO_SPLASH = 1
#SET CUSTOM OTL PATH VAR:
CPATH=GHoudini/Custom
#SET SCAN PATH
HOUDINI_OTLSCAN_PATH=@/otls;$CPATH/otls;$CPATH/otls_folder2
hope this helps? i'm really not much into the topic but i use this way to load my custom otls and the qlib and it works great.

thanks doudini, i have windows, sounds complicated how do i find out more about the command line?
its an external tool/program i think it doesnt come with houdini in windows.
you can download the windows build here:
http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ [ffmpeg.zeranoe.com]
after that extract the contents into a folder and run the batch (ff-prompt.bat). might have to run as admin.
it will open a command line where you can use “ffmpeg” command temporary.
the documentation on that you can be found here:
http://www.ffmpeg.org/documentation.html [ffmpeg.org]
and a quick guide for sequences:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/FFMPEG_An_Intermediate_Guide/image_sequence [en.wikibooks.org]
its a very powerful utility and can also record your screen, crop audio, convert formats, and a lot more.
not sure though if this is a good option for you. As edward said it probably should work in mplay on windows too. So there might be something wrong with the QuickTime installation. i dont really know. maybe there is an environment variable that has not been set by quicktime.
whats the error message you get?

if you want to put your rendered frames to a movie you can do it with ffmpeg.
if you use linux it will be available within mplay. works on centOS with ffmpeg installed. I remember in windows i never really got it to work so i had to do it manually in the comand line.

maybe you could use the precise mode in the wacom driver which makes the tablet use like a small area mapped to the whole tablet. therefor avoid clicking on buttons or somehting. not sure if this works..
Technical Discussion » Windows keyboard shortcuts

you cant use these shortcuts. they are outdated windows specific shortcuts and houdini wont accept them.
alt n is working here.
to close a window/panel in houdini use ctrl w. (works in explorer too)
to maximize window: windows key + up
to minimize windows key + down
in general you should probably switch to use windows key to manage your windows etc.
there are some nice shortcuts:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 [windows.microsoft.com]
you also might want to try out linux where you can pretty much custom map everything.
cheers.

chevita.
hi.
i am using a laptop.
I'm kinda lost in “hotkey manager” could tell me how to setup properly
thanks
right click on the selection tool. on the very bottom there will be “Reselect for current Tool”
you can then hold ctrl -alt - shift while you click on this entry. The Hotkey Manager will open and there you can change it to your needs.

do you have a US keyboard? please assign your custom shortcut if not.
also make sure you're in the active tool mode and not in selection mode or anything. if you go to selection mode or switch to any other mode while doing the reselection it wont work.
this can be accessed via menu left click on the selection tool and select “reselect for current tool”

you are probably better off writing your own shader for your purpose.
you can dive in the mantra surface shader and customize it to overlay the graphic on another surface color using the transparency.
also i would never use psd files in houdini but instead use tif files. they also support layers with photoshop and work fine in houdini.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Using The Hole Node?

hi,
thats not how the hole sop works.. its more of a projection type of hole. and well i wouldnt use it for polymodeling. Its good to work with vector files and cut vector files with it.
look at this screenshot how the hole sop works.
first screenshot shows a setup how to do this by modeling. on a cube.
1. select the face you want.
2. polyextrude and inset.
3- edge divide with share new points on
4. select face only cause now you'll be in edge selection. press 4 and shift-s to this.
5. add smooth sop.
cheers!

another handy shortcut:
page up and page down to select above/below connected node.
if there is 2 inputs you can use shift-pageup/down to switch to the other side.
in viewport you can also press p to open a window and get access to the sop's parameters.

I think we can agree we have a different opinion about this. thats okay.
But if we're at it. Here's some other inputs:
Better Layout for Shortcuts:
i love the way shortcuts are layed out in cinema 4d by using 2 keys binded. so you can do like w-s, w-d, it will give you a little popup and show the shortcut asigned when you press the first eky. I've also seen this in a lot of linux command line tools. Ranger the filemanager for example uses this and its amazing!
this way you can setup a ton of shortcuts without breaking other shortcuts. Cause atm its kind of hard setting up shortcuts that make sense in houdini.
polybevel:
- being able to make better curved bevels.
- when beveling 1 point on a grid subdivided bevel doesnt work. you will need to extrude and bevel the edge.
Snapping:
- sometimes bugs out and doesnt snap to points that are highlighted as selected.
- doesnt work if selectable flag of geometry is turned off.
Curve Tool:
- being able to select multiple points and move them without droping an edit sop
- The whole right click menu is just weak and with tons of polygons on weaker graphic cards can make houdini stop working.
- oh and yea please add a polybridge tool.. ♥

there is absolutly no advantage but making oldschool users frustrated if you change this! Z is the depth and should stay this way. with extrude you push something in depth and dont push it in X/Y/Z!
i dont understand why you want to change things that wont bring improvements at all but just make older users frustrated.
agree on this one. this is something that needs to be improved. there is no true local mode for your selected points/edges and peak handle doesnt help.

McNistor
p.s. before someone mentions “peak handle”, no, it's not the same and that's useful only for polys. Sometimes. It's a mess for edges, or at the very least, doesn't replace a local mode

but why change it if its correct and actually working? i dont see what is wrong with it.
please note that with the polyextrude you actually take a 2d face and extrude that. So depth axis for extrusion will always be Z. if you dont like that you can switch to global transformation which actually will move the face from its local null position and won't do a depth extrude. you could also set this to default.
hope it clears up things?? sorry.. i'm no expert either so maybe someone else could explain further…
also the Z axis is the actual up axis in 3d if i remember things correctly. you can cahnge it in preferences if you want.

It doesn't make sense, sorry.
take this simple example:
X and Y in 2d are the sides while Z is the depth.
It makes perfect sense.
