Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Uploading .bgeo files on the forum

If your .bego is just 1 file, (not a sequence of .bgeo files), then you can lock the File SOP node using the padlock button on the File SOP node (red button second from the left). This will allow the .bgeo to be saved inside the .hip file.

The ROP Output Driver will allow you to specify the file format you want - based on the options available (shown on the docs page). You just need to type the file format onto the file you are saving. For example “tube.geo”, Or if you are saving a sequence of frames; “tube_$F.geo”
The “Show File Matching” dropdown just shows you what files are already in your directory. It defaults to * - meaning “all”. If you type in something like .bgeo it will show you only the .bgeo files already saved in your directory. The “Show File Matching” dropdown filters your search.
You can certainly export nurb geometry from Houdini. I have no idea if it is a format that can be read by Rhino. Perhaps another user on this forum, that uses Rhino, and can let you know.
We do have an existing RFE (request for enhancement) requesting easier saving methods for error messages.
Please send me your .hip file that is causing these errors.

The node that Rob is referring to is the ROP Output Driver.
I have notified the Documentation team about the errors on the docs page (ID=40013)

We don't like making recordings during the presentation, the recording quality isn't very good. We will make a recording, of the same material, after the presentation. And that will be posted on our web site.

Doing fielded renders, in Houdini, has been a problem ever since the Fielded Render option was removed from the mantra ROP.
You can check out the H9 Mantra Field file on the exchange
http//www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=157
I will also attach an old file from H8 that had 2 work arounds for this problem.
To answer your specific question about the Field Merge COP - yes, you can use it to merge 2 rendered frames to create fielded frames. 2 frames become 1 frame, so your animated sequence is half as long.

Lens curvature can have a value of positive or negative, and simply distorts the film plane in a kind of parabolic shape (leaving the edge unchanged).
It's really only there for backward compatibility though, and it would be better to stick a grid in front of the camera with a surface shader to perform the distortion.

Technical Discussion » CLOTH AND IMPORTED OBJ HELP UNRGENT!!!

Hi Fred,
You have not included your nas.obj with your file. My test cases don't show any problem with this cloth. Make sure that you are using the latest build of Houdini 10.0. You may also want to increase the detail of your grid.
If you have AUPs with your license you should submit these urgent problems to Support@SideFX.com

Sorry about that.
The Pose Library is being (slowly) eliminated. It is no longer easily accessible, and can only be found by manually typing the following URL into the help browser
file///$HFS/houdini/html/poselib/index.html
where $HFS should be replaced with the full path.

What kind of snow? Soft, fluffy flakes drifting down? Heavy snow pouring down? You can use a basic particle system to make a fall of particles that are then given a ‘snow’ shader. You might also want to use the RainSheeting tool on the FX Tool shelf to start with. You can shorten the Rain Length Factor parameter to get a more snow-like look.
Let me know if you can't find the FX tool shelf.

Check under the 3D Viewport tab, (next to the Image Source tab), you might need to toggle on the “Automatically Place Image” button. Or toggle it off, and adjust it's position manually.

You can use a Background image. You load this into your viewport using the Viewport Display Options - ‘d’ hotkey in the Viewport. Go to the Background tab -> Image source tab and you can reference an image either from disk or from your COP Network.

You could use the Hotkey Manager to remap some of the control keys
http//www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini10.0/basics/config
http//www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini10.0/basics/hotkeys
I don't think that this will work for all the Maya hotkeys.

Hi Steve,
Here are some of the things slowing down your file
1.) You may have simple geometry, but you are animating your Fly with a bone system. This setup requires a lot of calculations, and will slow down your renders.
2.) You still have not saved your materials with your file, but I can see that they are .jpg format. As Fabian said, you will get increased performance if you convert them to .rat format. Also, if your textures are very large this will slow down your renders.
3.) You have 4 lights in your file, and 3 of them have shadows turned on. You will get faster renders with less shadow generating lights.
Now, the reason you are getting some missing frames is that your machine is having a hard time rendering this slow/heavy file. When the render crashes it might try to save part of the frame that it was rendering, but usually Mplay can't display that frame and will call it a “Bad Image”. So your missing and bad image frames are basically render crashes, probably due to your machine not being up to rendering this file.

Hi Steve,
You have not included any of you materials in your file. You also don't have a mantra node in the file. There are some geometry errors in /obj/FLY2 , but I don't think that they are the cause of the problem.
I can not judge your mantra problems without seeing your manta settings.
