Alas, I am still having problems.
I uninstalled H11, deleted the CWindows/keys directory, downloaded H 11.0.446.9 and reinstalled.
Upon running it, I still get the:
“ERROR: Key installation failed for LenovoLaptop
Please ensure that the server code and signature of the SERVER key for LenovoLaptop are correct”
Any ideas?
I don't think I have had this many problems getting Houdini to run since H5…
Thanks,
Craig

Still can't get a server key that works (see previous message), despite following the directions to a “T”.
Should I uninstall all of my Houdini (10 & 11) apps, change my PC name, reboot, and try again?!?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Craig Hoffman

I can't seem to get a proper server license (Windows 7 64 bit Lenovo Y560 laptop with Corei7, ATI 5730 GPU)- although H10 Apprentice worked fine before this:
I get this message after following all of your directions (three times and three reboots):
Key 1:
ERROR: Key installation failed for LenovoLaptop
Please ensure that the server code and signature of the SERVER key for
LenovoLaptop are correct
I entered the stuff as seen in the License Administrator into the page to get a key.
Also hkey.exe for H11 seems problematic to me- I can't exit out of it without the Windows window coming up and telling me it isn't responding and that I have to kill it. The hkey.exe for H10 seems fine.

So how do I decipher what is wrong with our DNS settings and determine what they should be set to? And where do all these settings exist?
Is this something I can change, or is it more of a network thing that has to be done by an IT guy? (I am on Windows 7 and this is for a network at a large company with the license served from a server.)
Thanks,
Craig

I don't expect anyone to know the answer to this, but is there a reason why Houdini checks for licenses seemingly every time you do something (fire off a render, do something in VOPS, etc.)? Can't it just check for a license once at start-up or once an hour or something?.. This seems like a way to slow everything down quite a bit.
Anyway, I am still not sure what to do with this info since I am at a large corporation with a new IT guy who doesn't know a lot about the networking side of things.
So how do I decipher what is wrong with our DNS settings and determine what they should be set to? And where does all these settings exist? It sounds like it is a network thing and not something I can set from my PC…
By the way, I am on Windows 7.

Is this problem only if you are using Wireless? Could you have the same slowness with a Workstation tied to a Network via Ethernet?
Also, will this slowness potentially affect other things like VOPs, etc.?
VOPs are pretty useless here on my work machine as any edit takes about 30 seconds to have the UI come back to editability.
Thanks,
Craig

This is great stuff- why don't we see more of your work in the Houdini Demo Reels?
Was it just lit and rendered in Houdini/Mantra, or was the character rigging and animation (besides mo-cap, of course) done in Houdini also?

Anyone having good/bad experiences with these?
I want to by a DX11 compatible laptop with ATI 5730 and don't want to experience problems I know some have had with older ATI cards on WinXP. Are the newer drivers on Win7 better?
Thanks,
Craig

Actually, never mind.
I didn't realize at first that you can bump it up to full screen (I don't get on Vimeo much…).
It looks great and is very readable…
Cheers,
Craig

Looks great, but might I suggest setting your screen resolution much lower (like 1024x768 or so) before doing the capture so we can better read the text? Even with HD in Vimeo, I can't read any of the SOPs or the text that is being typed.
I've been forced to work that low due to the limitations of projectors I hooked up to, but it made it much easier for the audience to read what I was doing, and the movie capture done via HyperCam was much more readable!
Thanks,
Craig

By the way, my measly 2 year old 2 GHz. Dual Core laptop with 2 GB of RAM can throw a ton of particles around quite quickly. POPs is quite fast- It really depends on what you are doing- there are a lot of things that can bring a sim to a halt that you can't really blame Houdini or PC. You have to understand what it is doing and how to optimize it (avoid calculating unnecessary things, keep complex expensive calculations to a minimum, etc.) to get a high performing particle sim.

Found this ad at Frys for $1200 (but you can find it online or elsewhere too) and you can't beat it for what it includes:
http://www.frys.com/product/5944184?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG [frys.com]
This would be a pretty kick-ass setup for most of your needs and the price is amazing for this power.
It's quad-core, but HyperThreaded and will run 8 threads (within certain limitations, of course).

Oops- this may not be out for Windows yet… But it might be a viable solution in a couple months!
