Thanks Georg, I read that as well, but I don't know what it means with regards to what actually goes in the parameter field.

In Mantra I'm suppose to be able to identify Objects by their ID as separate, extra image planes. I'd like to try this for compositing.
What is the syntax for that? What do I put in the Vex Variable field?

If I'm not mistaken you have to send your old license back and then redeem the new version. That can be done from the license manager once you've logged in.

It makes perfectly good sense, the frustrum of the light is square.
If you want to render through a light, substitute the camera for your light in the Main folder of the Mantra parameters and override the resolution to what you need, in Properties/Output.

Yes, you can do it in chops. Do you just want to place keys on every frame in a quick way? You can do that in the Dope sheet with the edit box. Draw the edit box on the frame range you want and hit “k” to create keys at every frame inside the box.

I take it you want to bring in the node network and not just the geometry?
What happens if you just open the 8.1 hip file in H9?
Any chance you can provide an example that we can look at?

Of course it does, I forgot to put the Scatter sop ahead of the colour sop ops:
But that doesn't help either since it just adds the colours together into a single colour across the volumn.

Would doing it this way help? Look in sphereobject1, I've used the same reference sphere that builds the volume, and transfered the point colours to the volume.

I believe Gutsy Gibbon uses earlier gcc libraries in which case you may need to use that version of Houdini. The one indicating the gcc.3.4 libraries.

You could possibly call in the image using the pic function in the point sop,
something like this, in the Add colour fields, changing the last character for the appropriate colour.
pic(“/obj/butterfly/cop2net1/image”,$BBX,$BBY,D_CR)
Then use a series of Group sop to separate out the colours, based on whatever threshold you are after, using the Group by Expression option.
$CB<0.8
or
$CB<0.4-$CG<0.2
And using the boolean operations in the Combine folder to further refine you choices.

Not that it helps your situation much, but I'm on a notebook with
Ubuntu 7.10, 64bit but with an Nvidia card. Following your steps, and using the same version of Houdini and Mplay launches fine for me.

Since I don't know what behaviour you are after here are a few parameters to look at.
In your sphere_object for the particles I would add viscosity, 0.1 , then
in the ParticleFluidsolver/Internal Forces “Enable Viscosity Force”. I would also increase the Gas Constant, maybe 1250.
Adding viscosity to the fluid will make the fluid particles distribute themselves more evenly across the rbd sphere, thus distributing the force.
I notice also that the rbd sphere has a large Z velocity, but you haven't increased the Physical Density, try 500.
These are just ball park settings and parameters, you don't necessarily have to change all these to get what you are after.

Is the rbd sphere actually exploding or is it just rocketing off into space.
Increase the particle separation on your fluid sphere and see what happens, then gradually reduce the separation till you get your lovely “explosion”.
I'm not actually seeing your effect on my machine.
