Hi,
Thanks, but this ain't the case. I do mean shader view, not viewport shading.
See the screenshot for details.

Hehe… cool idea 8)
IMHO, if SideFX and Pilgway could get together to automate the workflow even more, I bet almost everybody would be willing to pay say extra $100 - $200 on top of H11 to get the bundle. And it would, indeed, make Houdini whole.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi,
Could anybody confirm, please, that the shader view is dead on most recent builds? Looks like a bug to me.

May I ask the SFX devs why they limited the access to the changelog?
It used to be the fastest way to find out whether one should download a new build.
Restore the access, please!
Thanks,
Greg

“Physical” and “Up-to-date” don't get along very well, unfortunately ;-)
I also miss the reading kind of tutorials for Houdini - it's mostly vids nowdays, and vids are - for me - maybe good for tutoring, but useless as a reference. However, the help system got quite nice recently, and with most sections providing really comprehensive contents, you can find plenty of good reading out there.
If you can give up the “Physical” part, you can still find some good reading in PDFs, e.g. Andrew Lowell's book.
Cheers,
Greg

4. how can i specify which objects i want to take light from a specific lamp or to be rendered or not?
Hi,
Try using the light linker - see screenshot for where to find it.
For render/no render control, use the “Render” tab in ht Parameters Pane while you select any object.
For more in-depth control, you can also click the “Gear” menu in the Parameters Pane (for each object separately) and "Edit Parameters Interface" for the node.

Hi,
See the attached hip file - make sure you have the “Composite View” activated, and wait a couple of seconds - the final composite is feeding it's data directly from render drivers (mantra + wren), and layering them together.
After all, I used vex_toon shader, rather than than using the simple_ramp material - it is much less controllable, but very quick to set up.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi,
1) Houdini's vector renderer is WREN. See:
http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini10.0/nodes/out/wren [sidefx.com]
As far as I remember you can get the most flexible effects by compositing together the WREN and MANTRA outputs.
2) You can achieve some nice toon-like shading using the “ramp” material, in the material gallery - no need to write your own shader, simply adjust the color ramp to generate more flat, toon-like shading.
Hope that helps,
Greg

Hi,
This issue has been already raised some time last year, and as far as I know you can forget about the way it was done in the tutorial - it simply does not work as expected in 10.x.
I recall somebody on the forum posting an alternate, VOP-based solution, which is blazingly fast - I can't do it now, but later tonight I'll try to locate the hip file and will post it here.
Cheers,
Greg

Anyone else with positive GeForce experiences or card recommendations for Windows?

Hi,
I don't know any Mac solutions, but I've had similar issue (no icons) on Linux.
You can try two things:
1) http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&p=80505&sid=a5f3a8496a53efbf08f37914d86b2e4e [sidefx.com] (drop the libs in hsvg folder, but NOT the whole folder)
2) Sometimes on H10 sets wrong permissions for the houdini folder in the home directory. Removing the directory, or better changing the ownership to a correct user, might help.
I have no idea if any of the above can somehow be applied to a Mac install.
Cheers,
Greg

I'm glad things worked after all.
Hehe… I'm not, yet I'd not dare to enter a competition for the most embarassing mistake of the month, for a fear I could win. Luckily, guys here at the forum seem to be very patient with less experienced H users.
Have fun with H.10!

I've never heard of such issue before, but.. thinking aloud:
- around 25% H is still copying files. So, either a file cannot be read, or written. You've redownloaded, so the only other reason why a file cannot be read/copied (that I can think of) is antivir software. Tried disabling it?
As for writing, I assume you are installing from and admin account?
Is there a particular file, that is being displayed as copied by the installer, when the process breaks?
G.

Maybe a corrupted download? Have you tried re-downloading the app? H.10 seems to be running smoothly on Win.7/x64

Hi Ragupasta,
Thank you for the example file you attached! I've learned something new and good from it 8)
I have never figured out, how one should go about modeling something highly detailed (like a near-photorealistic car) in a procedural way? There ain't many modeling tutorials for Houdini, and virtually all that I found, deal with box-like models (e.g. bridge, elevator from 3dbuzz). Would you be able to point me (I'm sure more people would be highly interested, too) to some resources showing an example workflow?
Thanks,
Greg

Hmmm… and I'd suggest yet another approach, if you use network pane to add nodes:
Add a NULL to the end of your network, and move it a way down, to leave plenty of space above it. Set the display/render to the above NULL.
Set selection to any earlier node (the point where you are working). From now on, you should be able to add new nodes, the selection should move on automatically, while the display should stay at the ending NULL.
One other thing you might want to configure with this approach is the display settings in the 3d viewer (“d” key") - you can e.g. set current/selected to wireframe, so that the selected node generates only a wireframe view, while the shaded/flat/your preferred view stays on the final NULL. This is, as far as I've learned, the only way to work efficiently with subdivided polygons - viewing the subdivided, smooth result, while being able to manipulate the undivided polys/edges/verts.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi,
Knife allows you to do multiple cuts at once, so you should be able to achieve your result easily.
You can also try using booleans (cookie op for polygons, or surfsect for nurbs) - see attached image.
Cheers,
Greg
