I searched for a solution here and on Odforce, but no luck. If it has been answered already, I apologize. Here is a file with the behavior.
Technical Discussion » Houdini 14 Glue Network changes

I noticed (as did my students) that the glue network has radically changed from version 13 to 14. The old point wrangle nodes are gone, replaced by some constraint attributes, and the vex code is now in the DOP network. Unfortunately, I can't find the references in the help files to assist me in changing how it operates. When I glue my objects together and hit them with another object, the glue network rebuilds within a few frames, grabbing the pieces out of midair, freezing the action completely. I noticed this was changed in a point release of 14, as it was working well in one of the earlier versions (at least as my memory serves). Here is the code. Does anyone know how to get back to the original behavior, when once the network was broken, it stayed broken? Thanks.
# The default behaviour is to just import the geometry on
# the first frame. If the SOP is time dependent, import it
# on every frame.
if hou.lvar(“SF”) == 1:
return 1
else:
node = hou.node(ch(soppath))
return node.isTimeDependent() if node else 0

Couldn't you put down a transform sop, set it to points, set it to group matching the point number of the vertex you want to animate, then go to town? I'm not near my machine, so I can't test it out.

Only one day? Can't wait. I have the academic version of 14, and I have to say it really rocks! My indie version needs to match up. I can't go back…

Has anyone tried the point based cloth solver yet? Does it look like it might reclaim some of the speed lost in the finite elements version? I'm really wondering why houdini isn't a leader in this area. Maybe they can license some tech from syflex. Or, syflex can work on a plug in for houdini.

I have to show this to every one of my students too. It's certainly not intuitive, although it makes a lot of sense.

I'm by no means a vex expert, but isn't the syntax close enough to c++ that almost any editor would work? I'm functionally a newbie, so this is mostly a question

This one looks promising. I don't know if anyone has developed code definitions for vex, but they can be done by the user. http://notepad-plus-plus.org/features/ [notepad-plus-plus.org]

I don't have houdini open right now, but you need to use the node at the end of the ocean spectrum to write out a displacement map. The renderer uses that instead of the mesh. The mesh is a low resolution proxy so you can tweak your settings.

Hey, this “Indie” version of Houdini is suspiciously similar to the $400 version of XSI, which hooked me into extremely addictive software. Caution folks, this stuff is much more powerful. Talk to your kids about “indie”.

Have any of you guys played around with Clara.io? I'm coming back to it again and again, and finding much of the flexibility of Max and Softimage's modeling system, in a very intuitive interface. It's still in development, but the guys at Exocortex (Soft guys) are doing a fantastic job. It's coming along great, and the integration of Vray into the engine is pretty neat. Try their version of the “operator stack”.
(I am not paid by Exocortex, by the way. Just a fan.)

+1 for this too. At least make i a preference option. Shake is great, but totally disconnects input and output at the same time.

It would be fantastic to see Pooby on this forum soon. He's talked quite a bit about Houdini and fabric engine as alternatives to his beloved ICE. I think I'd expect to see him here soon. We should send him a warm welcome to this site.

Speaking as a long time xsi user (and license owner) I can say that we have no better home than right here. These guys are incredible, and will bend over backwards to make their tool as comfortable in your hands as they can. They are responsive and quite frankly, scary geniuses. It's like the entire company is being run by the scientists, instead of managers, beholden to the shareholders.
I'll try to be here as much as I can to help anyone trying to make the jump to houdini from soft, but the great news is, you won't have to wait for me. The community is very supportive and extremely intelligent and creative. Enjoy!
