I noticed the Extrude sop is now 'Extrude OLD'. What is the new version ?
The option to use a curve as an x-section profile is useful. I hope SESI isn't planning to deprecate it

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Poly Bridge bug ?

Oh yes, so it doesn't
I have to admit, my instinct in always to just stick another node down to get round these things (in this case a fuse SOP after the Houdini Catmull subdivide will sort that, but we don't get the smooth subdivide effect)… but it definitely looks fishy. Seems like the clean followed by the OSDiv gives the best results here
Hmm.. yeah.
Unticking the ‘orient polygon’ in the çlean' node suggests the bug might be due to polys facing the wrong way in the bridge sop.
Edit : using reverse node for the copied Primitives solved it.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Poly Bridge bug ?

Hello,
Thanks. I should have tried the cleanup node to get around the error. OR maybe add a fuse node after the subdivide ( though this way the sharp angle remains )
Both default Houdini Catmull and open Subdiv seem to be throwing up errors, unlike the latter however, the Houdini Catmul version does evaluate ( instead of just swallowing the mesh ;D ) But it doesn't seem to respect the area where the polybridge joins the polygon ( it seems the error is only in one direction of the bridge, the ‘red’side .
I have shown it in the attached video in the earlier post.

I recently came across a user at Odforce who was having issues with subdivision topology after a poly bridge sop.
http://forums.odforce.net/topic/29042-poly-bridge/ [forums.odforce.net]
I tried my hand at recreating the error, and it does seem there is some bug with the polybridge and Subdivide.
Any idea what could be causing this?
Attaching the file as well as a video.

Suggestion for H16 users, basically radial menus per context. You could have an array of modeling SOP in the radial menu for fast modeling, for example.
This. Why limit the radial menus just to three keys ? One reason could be to reduce the number of hotkeys but that can be easily circumvented by making them context sensitive.
V: Viewport related stuff: C planes, Adjusting pivots, Snapping, framing selections, changing viewport type and so on etc.
X: context sensitive triggers… Eg with polygons.. ermmm.. Primitives selected, pressing x brings up options for that task. With a potential 24 ( uhh I think there are more but I can't be bothered to count )slots per context, Sidefx can cram in so many of them in just one category. One each for edges, points, normals, terrain, VFX, rigging etc
C: Basic nodes creation.
And while they are at it, expand them to other UI areas.
Want to copy and paste parameter ? Just hover over the channel, Press C, slash up, "copy parameter", then change parameter, Press C again, slash down, "paste relative reference"
Animation editors, shading, VOP networks can all benefit from this global workflow.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » move/snap/orient the pivot

Yeah it seems a bit clunky at present.
Update:
Woot !
Apparently, there is some ‘pivot’ mode that can act on components. Just search for “detach” in the hotkey editor and choose the second option :'Toggle handle geometry detachment' and bind it to a hotkey ( it acts as a toggle )use snapping if needs be and viola instant ‘pivot mode’
I mapped mine to ‘Shift + D’( D for detach )
No more ‘ticking/unticking’ attach to geometry from right click menu.

There are also some green streaks in the selected edges.
haha - those are the edge directional indicators I mentioned.
So that's what they are. I thought it was Houdini playing tricks. How do I get rid of it ?

Thanks. Works as expected.
Though I can't see a pivot mode. Only way I can trigger it is by unchecking the “ättach to geometry” checkbox.

Haha.. Yeah. The idea I suppose is to make it comfortable jumping from one app to the other. Color schemes being one of them, other are Keyboard shortcuts.
Which is where Modo made it painless ( somewhat )… just a toggle in the preferences and good to go. Even XSI made it easy for users migrating from Maya.

Easily. Booleans finally make sense as a modeling tool.

Looks nice. One note is the so-called ‘artefacts since H15.5’. Do you mean the edge selection directional arrow? Not sure why no-one seems to have picked that up.
Thanks. I mean aliased lines after the edges are selected ( doesn't show up un selected or during the rollover )
There are also some green streaks in the selected edges. Unsure if it is due to wireframe lines dialed all the way to 0.1 thickness.

but we'll be following that with what I'm sure will be a much longer series ( ) on rigging in Houdini in a more general sense - bones, FK/IK, constraints, capture/deform, blendshapes etc.
Looking forward to them. Auto rigs are a great time saver but being able to create your own custom rigs would be a better investment.

Thanks.
I will try this.
Here's my own that I spent a couple of hours tweaking. Pseudo Maya style with a touch of Modo in it.
A GUI based approach would have saved me that time…

To remove the numbers on the viewport grids:
Right click the grid icon ( top right of the viewport ) and choose “no rulers.”
You also set the viewport color scheme by pressing D in the viewport and then choosing either Dark or grey as the color scheme. These schemes use a flat color. If you wish to further tweak the color settings then changing values ( top two lines ) in the “3DSceneColors.xx” file can help. You can open these files with any text editor.
Ideally, Sidefx should provide these tweaks via GUI

Technical Discussion » V bit issues

It seems Houdini 16 loves the VDB nodes.
Every time I press tab and try to enter the name of a node, as soon as I type the second letter, Houdini overrides the first letter and inserts ‘V’.. And it starts to display the nodes starting with V.
I have to backspace and start again. The second time around it functions as expected.
Anybody else having the same issue?
