Try adding the local computername in the hosts file, after the default entry of localhost, as in:
127.0.0.1 localhost mycomputername
save the file, and relaunch Houdini.
I got faster startup of the help server after doing so…
In Windows this file is located in
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
It can be edited in notepad or the likes…
Similar files, regarding name lookup exists in OSX and Linux as well…
Maybe a long shot, but…

Hi Everyone;
I think I've tried every 3d product demo out there
I share your experience. Not only have I tried the demo's, but actually invested money in a couple of products. Student lics, that is, but, anyway…
I think the guys at SideFX is doing the right thing in releasing the Apprentice builds. I must say, after just a couple of days fiddling around, I'm totally hooked on this application. Just incredible… It was like finding the “missing link” for me when I came over it.
I tried to purchase the HD version, but my CC bounced, so I'll upgrade when my bank account fills up! ops:
Incredible to have the opportunity to legally use this product for 99$.
So… Hi too you too!

Falling building?
It looks more like a cloth simulation, with some hair gel…
Just kidding ;-)
But you could maybe “stiffen” it up a bit…

EDIT: Suddenly the response got snappy… Maybe some indexing or something.
I also added the local computer name to the hosts file, and I think the startup time for the help system has improved after doing so. Might be my imagination, though…
So… No worries! :-)

Hi!
As I continue my exploration of this HUGE software package, I encounter many wows, and many ‘oh my god’s, but I believe this is an awesome 3D package, as I get to know it…
One thing I've noticed is that the response for the built in web server, that displays the help content is very slow in my installation…
It's the only thing I've noticed that doesn't run smoothly, but nevertheless, it would be great to speed it up a bit. Is this a priority setting or something?
FYI, my specs are as follows:
CPU: Intel CoreDuo 3ghz (E8400)
RAM: 4GB DDR2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD4850 (512 GDDR3)
OS: Vista Business x64
Houdini: 9.5.230
I could have run this on my Linux partition, but it's these other apps as well you know…

Hi!
I've used other packages before, but I'm totally new to Houdini.
In the tutorials they use blinn and phong materials, but I don't see them in my install…
Could someone give me a clue?
