I didn't put a Light Shader on it, so I assume the default shader understands the Light “Cone Angle” and that is where the photons go?
Thanks,

Hi!
Does the type of light control how Photons are emitted? For example, if you have a cone light, are all of the photons emitted only inside the Cone?
If so, what controls exactly where the photons are emitted in the Cone- the “Cone Angle” or the Viewing Frustrum (Focal Length/Aperture) of the Light (and why aren't they related)?
Thanks,
Craig

Also I am finding I have to crank up the “Global Tint” in the Irradiance Tab to really high numbers (>100) to really see the Caustics. I am using “No Irradiance”, but this seems to be the only way to brighten the photons up.
Or am I missing something obvious?
Again, I am doing this in H7…
Thanks,
Craig

Hi Peter!
Thanks a lot. I actually found your tutorial a while ago and it seemed like I was doing everything correctly. I went back to an old H7 version and it seems like it works properly. Could it be broken in H8? Or at least the version I am using (8.1.704)?
I can't seem to get H8 to render out a pmap larger than 1 KB.. But H7 does it fine.
Maybe it's just me.
How's it going over there? How are you liking London? Hopefully we can do lunch in Soho again soon!

By the way, I found my old video tutorial on Caustics by Peter Bowmar and have followed an old posting on OdForce and I still can't get it to work. I know I have done this in the past and am wondering if something is broken…
This is 8.1.704 running on XP.

Any good tutorials on this? I couldn't find much in the docs that helped.

Are you actually able to record MIDI?
Can you send me all of your settings? There are so many and I can't try every permutation…
Also, are you pushing the Play button for this to work like you need to do for Audio?
Thanks for any help.

No, that didn't work. I think the MIDI software synth is mapping the controls to something that Houdini doesn't see.
I am not sure, though.
Anyone done anything like this before?
Thanks,
Craig

Okay, so now I am using MidiYoke and Houdini is seeing the MIDI Device!! That is a huge step and thanks to the Audio guys here at work for help with this.
So I have a Joystick going to Midi via VMidiJoy properly and a Soft Synth that Houdini sees. BUT I can't seem to get Houdini to acess the correct MIDI channels. I assigned the X Joystick to “Pitch Modulation” in VMidiJoy and made the first MIDI-In CHOP channel look at “Pitch Modulation” and it doesn't seem to pick up anything.
Plus the MIDI Channels that VMidiJoy seems to be able to write to don't match up well with the ones in the list in Houdini for it to read.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get the MIDI info into Houdini properly? There are so many confusing parameters from “Current Frame” to “Time Slice” to a myriad of other things. I just want MIDI input to come into CHOPs…
Thanks!

Here are links to the programs:
V midi Joy converts USB to Midi info

Midi OX - creates a patchable Midi application (runs like a soft synth) called a Midi Yoke. This can be assigned as a midi control source inside an application. http://www.midiox.com/ [midiox.com]

I am very interested in this. In fact I am giving a presentation on Game Prototyping in Houdini on Wednesday at EALA. If I can just get Joystick input into Houdini my demo will be way cooler (see MIDI In question in Technical Discussion).
But it looks like simple object export- something you can do with obj files and bring into many other packages or game engines. Any details on what it does special? Can it export animated rigs and weighted meshes?
Thanks,
Craig Hoffman

Sorry for the dumb question, but I am under the gun trying to get my new laptop to work for a presentation by tomorrow…
I just got a new laptop and the MMB “click” on the scroll wheel doesn't seem to work in houdini. I tried an older USB mouse from my old laptop which worked fine in that laptop (MMB click on scroll wheel with Houdini..) and made sure the driver was updated in the new one, but same story.
In all my Mouse Controls for XP (the OS I am using) I see nothing for Middle Mouse Button, only scroll wheel settings. Then I noticed that a MMB click in some other applications seemed to work, so maybe the mouse is working okay. Am I missing something?!? Why won't it do anything in Houdini?
Thanks,
Craig

Hi,
I am trying to get Joystick controls into CHOPs via the Midi IN CHOP. I am using VMIDIJoy to remap the Joystick to MIDI and I see that that program is picking up the Joystick fine, but I can't seem to get Houdini to see it.
When I look at the MIDI In CHOP it only gives me the option to see a “MIDI File” in “MIDI Source”. According to the help file it is supposed to also give me options for “Hardware Port” or “Internal”. Any ideas why the MIDI In CHOP doesn't let me have the option for the other Sources?
Anyone got any clues to how to get this working? This is for Windows XP.
Thanks,
Craig Hoffman

Supposedly if you use one of the new “Hybrid” hard drives Vista will get much faster (also called “ReadyDrives”).
In addition, the smart caching it allows will allow for less disk access so it will also increase battery life for laptops.
That's great to hear it works. I just ordered a laptop but opted for XP Pro. I do have a free Vista upgrade certificate I have to fill out… but I plan to wait until at least Vista SP1.
The new DX10 upgrades (that you have to have Vista for) are going to be amazing in the future for gaming and other packages that use DirectX for hardware rendering. Unfortunately Houdini only uses OpenGL which tends to lag behind DirectX and Houdini doesn't even keep up with current OpenGL hardware shader capability, meaning it is far behind Maya/XSI/Max in this regard.

Hi everyone,
Is there a way to draw things (in this case textured Sprites) as ‘Additive’ in the OpenGL View rather than ‘Alpha Blended’?
Thanks for any help!

I also think that a lot of Studios don't factor in the cost of TD's to do all the scripting necessary for Maya to do what you want it to do. Sure a lot of artists know Maya, but once you want to do anything somewhat complicated or make a decent pipeline you need to cough up a lot of money for scripters that you don't have to with Houdini.
And salaries cost WAY more than software.

I didn't know about the hitting “d” over the COPs window. (Sorry I have only been using PRISMs/Houdini for about 14 years… )
Anyway, I see my Image Cache size as set to 10 MB. What?!? So I am going to bump that WAY up and also set some of those Video Card settings (that I have never seen before!) to take advantage of my NVidia 7800!
Thanks for all the help! I will report back if this stops my crashing!
Cheers,
Craig
