I don't know what the problem is but I remember several years ago doing pipeline on Windows with Cygwin that there are subtle differences between true Unix tools and the Cygwin ones. I just can't remember what those differences are or how they're caused, sorry…

Ah yeah, that makes sense. That's what it looked like but of course, it's a lot harder to see and detect in UV space.
I miss the Lightwave feature that would detect coincident polygons, though I doubt it worked in UV space (v 5.5 was the last version of LW that I used).

I built a face rig that could have mocap applied to it. It took about 2 weeks so it's not going to be quick to explain. Hopefully SESI will put out a Face Autorig like the Body Autorig some day… Basically, use bones, as the wirecapture is too slow when you start using lookups. Which is too bad, since wirecapture would be the way to go if it was usable.

Quite a bit of Superman Returns was rendered in Mantra too, the whole section where Superman rescues LL and co from the boat, which breaks in half etc. Ocean, boat, helicopter and likely other stuff too that I'm forgetting (I left R+H for school before shots started).

Technical Discussion » Impact data in Wire-Wire collisions always there?

Hi,
In RBD DOPs collisions, the Impacts data isn't actually there until a collision occurs. In Wire-Wire collisions, after the first cook, the Impact data is always there (with nothing in it) regardless of collisions or not. Curious why.
Cheers

Looks like either you have duplicate polygons or the bias on the occlusion needs to be increased. The bias depends on the size of your geometry so if you have very large geometry, like 100 units across, the bias might be .1 or even .5 even though the default is .001

The Houdini browser is just Mozilla (1.7 last time I heard but that might have changed) so you should be able to install Acrobat Reader plugin, plus various video plugins in the $HFS/mozilla directory.
However, I don't like video (my preferred tutorial format) embedded in a web browser, since webbrowser video viewers tend to have less control than a standalone one. I usually just position the viewer above Houdini over an unused pane and I'm done…

Of course, Houdini doesn't read .fbx so you'll need to process them into something Houdini does read, like .bvh or .amc using Motionbuilder etc.

Technical Discussion » RFE Sort columns in Details View Pane

I agree, once Attribute CReate came along, it's been much easier to reset attributes procedurally (i.e. correctly) rather than selecting a column in the spreadsheet and then pow, your SOP is locked. I can't remember the last time I had to lock a SOP except to prevent cooking.
The exception is in the Edit Capture Weights spreadsheet, I select columns all the time in that, and not sure how useful sorting is in there generally, though it certainly might be.

You can also turn off “Diffuse” and “Specular” on the light which will then also turn them off in OpenGL.
I find the default Houdini lights quite lacking compared to what's available by default in other packages. In a previous job, we created our own light object that had many more controls, UI widgets and much better shaders that gave the controls (and more) that you're looking for.
Unfortunately, the Light Linker wasn't usable after we did this, as it is hard-coded to work only with default Houdini Lights and Objects (
Hopefully someday there will be a major upgrade to the lights and default shaders to catch Houdini up with 3DS and Maya etc.

Peter B

Yeah, I use bundles for everything when lighting, makes it dead simple to just have “nolights” bundle or something similar, then no need to modify dimmers etc.

What about something in 456.cmd that opens a new floating pane, set to a Help browser, then point that at an HTML file. Pretty info, easy to update and add to, can even load .hip files if you want )

I think the only way to stop holding up HOudini would be to us “xmessage” via a Unix command rather than using Message… then you could run it in the background with &.
Also, I've used Ben's method with success as well. I have a message in my 456.cmd that asks if I want Autosave turned on (which I almost always do) that works well.

Peter B

Put a “message” script into a Logic CHOP maybe? Or just
run(“message something”)
into an object's pivot or something? As long as it cooks it should come up…

The resolution doesn't matter too much with textures, they get loaded regardless. ALways make sure they're RAT format which use far less memory (and are higher quality). If you're raytracing, use the -M and -G flags to control the amount of data cached (see mantra -h for info)
Like Edward said, the best thing to do is use the crop settings to render 4 pictures of 4k each or something like that.

Hey Jeff,
Cool, thanks for the info! Sadly, I don't have root access to do special mounts or mod the fstab. However, I do at home so I'll try it there )

Hey,
How did you get the Gnomon DVD to play on Linux? It appears to have hidden folders or something where the actual movies are ( I'm not looking to crack it just play it )
