I ended up just purchasing 2 licenses for Indie. One to run on my MacPro, the other to run on my laptop.
Not a great solution, but does't break the bank either.

OK, I figured out that for some reason I have to alt-click in the field to turn it ‘green’ (as if there was a keyframe there) and my script works.
Not sure why that is, but it works now.

Hi,
I've added a parameter to a subnet of Operator Path type.
Not sure if this is the correct type, but I'm using it to reference a material that is being used inside the subnet.
That way, I don't have to dig down, etc.
Anyway, I'm wanting to dynamically build the reference using script based on $OS and opname(../), etc.
I've been able to do this with string type parameters, but for some reason, it's not working here.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks,
Jim

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Houdini crashes when idle

This is strange.
So I have a project open in Houdini Indie (doesn't matter which version) and in about 5-15 minutes or so, as I'm working on my other computer, and Houdini is just sitting there idle, it crashes.
Windows 10, iCore 7 6950 with 128GB of ram and Titan Pro Pascal.
Anyone have that happen? Any suggestions?
Jim

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Material Tiling Issue - I want it to NOT tile, but it's tiling

OK, I figured out a ‘work around’ but not sure if it's a ‘proper’ way to do this.
I swapped the S-T inputs and then rotated the UV in the uvtexture and offset it by -1 in the X and it worked.
Not sure why it worked, but it did.

That worked great, except now my texture is reversed. I've tried UVtransform both using a SOP on the grid and in the texture and can't seem to figure out how to get it flipped.
Any ideas?

So, I haven't used bind at all yet, but I think what's happening is that you are accessing the uv attribute that the uvtexture SOP created, then creating a float out of it, but you only need the first 2 as it's not 3D information.
Not sure what the S and T inputs stand for, but it works and I am very thankful to you for that!

Hi,
OK, so I've created a grid with a few rows and columns and I also created a 2-sided material using isfrontface and a switch in a Material Shader Builder.
My problem is that it ends up tiling my image depending on how many rows/columns I have, and that's not what I want.
I need the extra geo in the rows/columns so I can bend this smoothly.
I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I've tried all kinds of UV Projection, UV Edit, etc. nodes, but nothing seems to help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

Wow, that's really cool. Thanks!
I was going to try to use FEM, but that's probably more complicated and time consuming.
I guess I know nothing about the capture SOP and how that all works.
I've used bones in C4D and Lightwave, but not Houdini.
It's a cool rig, just trying to grasp how it's set up so I can make it more procedural.
Thanks again!

I'm trying to figure out a good method for creating a magazine with let's say 5 pages, and then be able to open the magazine, and flip through the pages.
I'm not wanting stiff pages, I'm wanting realistic pages that react to the air as they open and close.
Any ideas of where to start with this?
Thanks,
Jim

I figured it out. I changed from constant birth rate to impulse activation and an impulse count of 3. Worked great for what I needed.

Thanks Rob.
Well, I'm not trying to make a single ‘line’ so to speak. I'm needing pops as I'm simulating gun powder as it spins off a bullet that's just been fired out of a gun. So I need individual particles, but in a single line and not in clumps. So the line will eventually ‘break up’ in the wind as it progresses.
You have a great solution, if only I needed a line and not a simulation in POPS.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
OK, what I'm trying to do is create a SINGLE particle stream per points in a group.
What I'm getting is ‘dashed’ lines of particles clumped together.
I've tried increasing the substeps, but that doesn't help much.
I'm needing a single stream of particles emitting from each point.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
I'm having some difficulty creating a shader that will obtain the results I'm needing.
The bullet_houdini.jpg image is what I've come up with so far. I modeled the bullet in C4D and am using a high-poly model because we are going 2/3 screen with the bullet and it will be fairly close up.
The bullet_reference.jpg is my reference image.
Currently, I'm using the principled shader with a normal map for the small dings/dents and a color image I created in Photoshop.
I'm using an HDRI image to light the scene.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the exact same error code. It's a project I have rendered before, but now it's giving me that code.
It will render for 20 or 30 frames, then give me the error.
Anyone find a reason or solution?

Thanks,
All my simulations are cached out, not sure if that's what you mean by “precache the data.”
I'm somewhat new (1-year) to Houdini and am still learning.
I downloaded the latest production build and it seems to work now, but I'm still wondering if it will crop up again.

Hi,
I'm struggling here trying to finish a render. I'm 669 frames through a 720 frame render and Mantra is exiting and giving me an error.
It's happening during the ‘compositing’ stage of the render. At least that's what it says in the little render dialog that shows up when you're rendering.
It first gave me exit code -1073741819.
Then, I rebooted and it gave me exit code 1 with some verbose text saying: Mantra error loading geometry obj/output/OUTPUT form stdin
I am at a loss as to where to go from here.
Any help would be appreciated.

Jim

Hi,
OK, I've created a primitive attribute called ‘parent’ that holds a string value.
In a primitive wrangle, I'm attempting to delete all primitives whose parent = “piece_1”
I've tried this, but it's giving me an error:
I'm thinking I need to use the attrib() function, but can't figure out how to make it work.
Any help would be appreciated.

That's actually a more elegant way to do it anyway as I have multiple pieces I want to remove at various frame rates.
