Having read and re-read the KineFX Docs, I'm not sure exactly what attributes constitute a valid KineFX rig - what is required vs what is optional?
I'm really interested in procedural rigging, but need a good foundational understanding of what attributes Houdini needs, so that Houdini can “see” a valid KineFX rig.
Points connected with Polygons is the starting point, but, is it then:?
Point Attributes
name {unique string}
local transform {4x4 matrix}
(global) transform {3x3 matrix}
Vertex Attributes
vertex:point list
Primitive Attributes
vertex list
Detail Attributes
{skeleton sop creates a varmap here, is that required?}
Thanks.

Looks like the H18.5 launch may be having some slight issues - some Users have been given access to the H18.5 Beta builds (either by mistake or intentionally) - and that's why some Users have a Daily Build download link and other Users do not (is what I'm guessing).
Lets give SideFX some more patience to sort things all out.

One thing that sucks, because CHOPs is single-threaded is NLA - KineFX is a much welcomed addition to Character Anim in H, but, until CHOPs gets upgraded or replaced, then that will continue to be a sore point.

Awesome. I super excited to see how KineFX works! I was already working on a character rig but i'll wait until this release
I had downloaded Cascaduer, but had put off learning it, because I didnt want to learn something new, and then figure out how to integrate it into my pipeline - so, I'm also very excited about KineFX as well, especially (hopefully) if it can be used with Crowds.

From what I can tell, KineFX moves Character tools down from OBJ level (setting up rigs using OBJ nodes) to SOP level (setting up rigs using packed primitives).

Redshift3D has H18.5 support as well, for about 3 weeks now.
So, my guess is, some H18.5 Beta users wanna test 3Delight, so they added H18.5 support.

Redshift support does not monitor this forum - I would advise you to post to the Redshift3D forums [www.redshift3d.com]

Man….the pain we get from thumbnails in RS C4D - omg, I'm with jsmack, not worth it at all, in its current design.
Now, if there was a special like, separate tool or context, that is specific to creating Shaders, that, like, where, you cant do any other type of rendering (to avoid conflicts/race conditions), then, that'd be really nice to have.

Yes, and there's two approaches that I'm aware of:
1 - Import a Crowd Agent to the /stage - this will create a Mesh and USD Skeleton - as the USD Skeleton deforms, USD will deform the Mesh according to the bindings.
2 - Bake out the Crowd Agent results to USD - this creates a single USD file that contains a Mesh with TimeSamples - as the /stage frame changes, the Mesh will be sampled and the /stage updated (this is not a deform, as the entire animation has been pre-calculated)
Which option you choose, depends on your needs - since I'm rendering on the GPU, I choose Option 2, so that I can instance/offset the animation.
So, either of the above will get you an animated Mesh, but, to my knowledge, there is no way to Loop that animation in H18 on the /stage.

To my knowledge, Animation Clips is the missing piece needed for looping in LOPs. Unfortunately, this feature is broken in H18 (per SideFX support), and will be fully supported in H18.5
Plus, in preparation for H18.5, SideFX had to break some working Redshift Hydra features (i.e., Redshift PostFX) as well.
So, my efforts are on hold for this project until then. My assumption is that H18.5 will be released sometime this summer.

Yeah man, the only “hint” i've sniffed out, in all of my web surfing, is “end of summer”.
So, if you go by 4 seasons = 4 quarters, then the end of June is the end of summer.
So, I hope we're guessing right Kays.

Apprentice allows 3rd party engines indeed (restricted to IPR only) - and it makes sense when you think about it, otherwise, you'd have to actually purchase Houdini to evaluate how the 3rd party engine performs in Houdini.

I agree with Midphase, just getting Solaris/Hydra stable would be enough for me for H18.5 - along with updating to the latest USD spec. Like, I cant believe there was zero crashes during the HIVE presentations.
I mean, they are blazing new trails here, going where no DCC has gone before with USD/Hydra, while ALSO building a Render Engine at the same time, so kudos to the efforts of the SideFX R&D team here, for getting this far - but, there are potholes a plenty in H18.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, it looks like that will fix the install, which we've both also already completed.
What's still outstanding, is actually rendering from Houdini on Ubuntu.
