For the icons you need to have access to the houdini9.5 folder in your home directory, launch terminal and type
sudo chmod -R 777 houdini9.5
the little lock icon in the folder should disappear, you still need to disable the windows effects
in older version of houdini, the houdini preferences folder did had this problem, maybe SESI should squash this tiny little bug.
good luck

hi
As Michiel said, cloth had MAYOR fixes in the recent builds, he said that had to be fixed for 9.5 and yes they did, I can now interact with cloth live in the viewport as solid and “realtime” as the video I posted on Blender.
The nice nice thing here is this, we made a point, cloth needed some fixes, and SESI hears you, takes notes, and improves the product, just as you guys said, this means only one thing. SESI ROCKS and houdini is your SONG.
I wanna say thank you, once again to everybody at SESI.
keep it ROCKING!!!

I just wanna share this because, as discussed before cloth is “not That ready” in houdini, sure you can do simple grids stuff but when it comes to real production stuff like a tshirt things get ugly.
http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/feature-videos/?video=realtime_cloth [blender.org]
I'll like to do some stuff like this in houdini, that's awesome and I'm gonna stress test Blender as soon as I got some time, as I said, with a real project.
just to end I love houdini

Hi
Houdini works very nice, your problems seems to b e related to your graphics card, NOT houdini.
Those nvidia consumer cards are not that great for 3D appz that suck all that they can, but there is a nice solution.
get the omega drivers
http://www.omegadrivers.net/omega_drivers.php [omegadrivers.net]
those drivers are tweaked for performance on lowEnd cards, I had a very very old card at home with those drivers and it worked great, give them a try.
just realize this drivers ARE NOT SUPPORTED by nvidia and you use them under your own responsibility.
good luck

hi
Flash and 64 bit linux still has some issues, what I did is install a 32 bit browser, you have a lot of option in linux, firefox 32, flock, or Swiftweasel a very nice alternative.
and you can use flash like crazy,
about CMIVFX, if you need downloads you can buy them, write them a mail and they'll tell you how much for a download of your videos, is little quota.
ANd guys who NEEDS a 64 bit browser, i think is crazy.
good luck

Hey Chadi glad you like it
This is what I did, you already had those lines where you need it the rails to go so I grouped those lines first, this so I could delete them later and now include them in the sweep,
then resample those lines to give you the right number of inside reails,
then in the add node, all it does is connect the dots, and I'm saying " connect the dots specified by N, the skip one and start again, so the expresion looks for the resample node to see how many dots it is creating and use that many plus one to close the loop, making a closed polygon, then, delete the lines we don't need in the sweep, the horizontal lines, and sweep that.
the add node is great, I use it a lot
hope you get it now

Renderman is not part of any software, is a standalone renderer
houdini simply offers a connection to that.
asn as woldwood said, you can use some other renderman rendereres. I like 3delight.

Hi
oh man!!
yeah I played with the file for a while and I couldn't get any good results, and the sim is so damn slow, I actually tried last night at home for about 2 hours and nothing, the body interpenetrates the body etc, I thought that it will be easier at work in the morning, fresh, in my powerful workstation, but no, same story, tweak stuff for about an hour and nothing, I was getting very frustrated so I thought that I'll give it a try in maya.
In ten minutes I had a useful result, need tweaking, think it took me more time to export the models, add some bones and set some keyframes than the actual cloth setup, made the shirt triangles, made a cloth object, made the skin a cloth collision object, selected the SHIRT PRESET for the cloth, hit play, looks nice, modified the collision offset a little, and done.
I don't wanna sound bad here, I just wanna see both sides of this, I love houdini, I'm doing lots of thing in it now, but I thing cloth still needs some work, or maybe there's a setting we didn't tweak to make it super fast.
I won't let this go, I'm gonna keep testing till I get a nice result, maybe later today @ my break.

Hey!!
Sure is possible, a lot of game companies are now looking into houdini for it's procedural way of doing magic, there's even a houdini to Torque plugin.
So is totally possible

I like it
if you don't, get another more money and buy HOUDINI ESCAPE, but I can tell you this, no one else give more than sidefx, they offer a no time limit apprentice edition, non-obtrusive watermark, lots and lots of videos.
when was the last time you saw autodesk give away almost 3 hours of fluids training?
be happy that you can buy a HD version, for 99 bucks and make good use of it, couple of years back you got 2 option, apprentice, and $16000 or so for the master version.
even the apprentice version has even MORE than ESCAPE, apprentice does everything that master does, ESCAPE is limited a little.
I love it, don't remove it , they won't anyway

Hi
there's some HP laptops that come with nvidia graphics
a friend here at work got one of those, with a 17" in screen
in about $1000.
the other nice thing is it has 2 HDs, is the only laptop I've seen with 2 HDs
that's great, think of the possibilities.
I think is this one
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8779397&st=hp+laptop&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1204332554359 [bestbuy.com]
and of course we put ubuntu linux on the thing and runs sweet, we also installed XP, very hard process to DOWNGRADE from vista, no freaking drivers, sata drives, a mess, but we did.
