Here is an erosion starter scene I found on OdForum. It maps color on to the surface. You can visualize slope, flow and trails. Animate the step_mult to cause the erosion to evolve over time.
Use the attributes generated to further deform the terrain.

Ok, after looking up the Hscript IF syntax it looks like you need commas, not space colon.
So you don't really need to set a chkey at all, The result will become the value at that time. The first value is if the statement is True and the second value is if the statement is False.
Place the above code in the Y-Translate field to achieve your original request.
if($F>12,15,5)

You can use multiple line expressions in Houdini. Click in the field where you type the expression and press CTRL-E/CMD-E to activate the multi-line editor. You also get a syntax warning log in the lower areas as well.
You may want to look up the syntax for IF, I don't think then is part of it in this Script language.

No need to wait for money anymore to learn Nuke. They have a non-commercial learning edition just like SideFX. Check it out. Also check out Mari for painting your 3D objects.
Houdini Indie and Apprentice » OBJ's combined in file dialog

If it is not showing up, your file path is probably wrong. Did you look at the path in the File node to see if it was valid? It may have remnants of the $F which is supplied by the open dialog if you negotiate that dialog incorrectly.
Can you post the OBJ file?
I have not encountered a single OBJ that Houdini can not load.

Just make things that are fun at first.
For instance, CTRL-Click on the Sphere then go to the PyroFX shelf and click Flames. After the simulation has been generated click the PLAY icon on the timeline to see your animation.

Turn off “Show sequences as one entry” checkbox, then choose your OBJ file. Houdini detects the number in the filename and thinks it's a sequence by default.

The general consensus is that After Effect open EXR is broken. As of CC 2015 Adobe has not updated any of the 3D Channel tools to work with modern file formats. Another case of legacy rot within the After Effects effects system.
So people say use Nuke instead of After Effects.
You can view that the Op_Id is being exported correctly by simply bringing in one of your outputted EXR file into the Houdini COPs system. There you can use a luma key node to isolate the Op_Id for the object. In order to find the actual Op_Id of any object CTRL-Click on it in the render view when it has no material assigned (what a drag, CTRL-Click pops up a Mantra dialog instead Pixel Information if an actual material is assigned.)
So the work around would be to render out your EXR files with Op_Id, bring them back into Houdini and key out the object IDs using the lumakey node. Follow that up with a ROP Output Driver to write the keyed object back out in an After Effects friendly format such as PNG or JPG. Then you can use them as animated mattes over the master render sequence.

Here is how you can fetch and set parameters directly in Python without using HScript.
my_node = "/obj/geo2/carve1"
current_value = my_node.parm("valve")
current_value += 1
my_node.parm("valve").set(current_value)

The simplest way is to simply make your selection then click the group icon on the shelf. If you don't want to edit the numbers in the group pattern field then simply throw the entire node away, remake your selection and click the button again.

Inside the pyro_sim network you will find a source_density node.
You can animate the Activation from 1 to 0 to turn off the sourcing into the simulation.
You can also animate the Scale Source Volume parameter from 1 to 0 to reduce the volume over time.
The pyrosolver1 node contains a Bouncy Lift value under the Simulation tab. This controls how fast the smoke rises and the Bouncy Dir controls which direction the smoke will travel in. Kind of like a hard coded wind or anti-gravity.

Just don't go all the way to black with your color. Instead of black choose grey then move to black. Then you will get some points in that grey region as well. Make sure to set your Density Attribute inside the Scatter node to Cd, it defaults to density.

It looks great. I stopped it several times to examine those snow renderings.
What was your final render size? 1920x1080?
How long did each frame take to render, and I guess I am interested in what Mantra settings you used to achieve such a clean look. There is very little noise.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » New Houdini Indie v 15.5 Mac OS X 10.11 freezes on save as .hip

I am using Houdini 15.5 on my MacMINI running El Capitan so I don't think it is OSX related. Your machine seems to be up to spec for video card. The only other thing you might want to try is to run Disk Utility and check your disk for problems. A lockup on save might still be related to a bad sector on the disk.
Can you do a save on the default empty scene?
Maybe try saving to a USB drive just as a test..?
Do you have any strange non-english characters in your system user name?

You can convert the cloud to a VDB then use a file node to import the resulting file. This should help performance and lock in your cloud as a single frame object.
