… especially for someone like myself who needs it all spelled out clearly?!

I am just getting underway with mine, the box-stock 17", 2 GB, 2.33 GHz, RadeonX1600 model, running XP Pro with SP2 off BootCamp, and am slamming against the hkey.exe wall.

For those who have forged on before me: what changes from the OEM setup have you found to make Houdini run best? I understand perhaps the ATI drivers need to be removed/re-installed? What exactly is involved with that, as I've seen what appear to be differing solutions? It seems from previous posts that jiggling the HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE setup makes things run slow. Would this apply even when just using strictly the character animation functionality, avoiding heavy procedural stuff?

Please be gentle, as I'm a technewb!

Many thanks, in advance.

Enabling HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE is one of those last-ditch things you can do to be able to run Houdini on a card that isn't working properly with it. You can't do any serious work with it, perhaps a little eval, and it's useful for debugging problems. Essentially you're running without a 3D graphics card when you do that.

As far as getting it working on a Mac, I'll let someone else answer that.

Cheers,
