hi!
I have been having this houdini 9 beta just laying there cause I stumbled on to some ridiculous obstacles trying to learn (simple things)
I thought I had the time now to give it a go again this time trying
to follow the procedural forest h9 blog tutorial.

The problem
when I try to copy a simple cube to the grid, nothings happens and by that
I mean the cube doesn´t copy itself over all the grids vertex point.
In the tutorial movie it doesnt really show exactly how he is going about to
do the copying it seems..and I checked the help menu and followed that
to first klick the modify copy button, then select the cube and enter then select the grid and enter ..but still nothing..
anyone who has the simple answer?

Hi phamarus,

Did you set active the display of the copy SOP?
It's the blue square at the right of the copy SOP node.

Also post the version of houdini you are working on. That can helps.

bye!

Thanks for the fast reply.

The version is 9.0.653
I guess I shoud update that to a later build ops:

and yes both objects are displaying correctly they are blue and fine
the thing is that I klick the copy button without having anything selected and then selecting the cube object hit enter and it just turns up a new box object with a circle around and this is happening in the network view.
By the way..I did manage to get it to work..when using the tree view and
fiddling around but can´t get back to it at the moment.
I am surely doing something wrong in the order at the selection process.
but following the order as in the procedural forest tute movie or the help instructions doesn´t do it.

o well a couple of hours more then Ill get the hang of it hopefully

Ok, you can do it in the H8 way, without the shelf.

Follow this instructions
-Create new scene.
-Go to network editor
-Create a geometry node. (press Tab. and then press “geo”, you'll see the node)
-Select the node (in the network editor) and press enter or i key to go inside.
-Now create a box, one grid, and one copy node.

connect the output of the box in the first input of the copy, and the output of the grid to the second input of the copy.

Now press the blue/display button of the right side of the copy node. And that's it.

Preatty basic thing, even I know how to do it ) I`m just joking, at the begining it could be very hard

Good luck!

hmm I think Ivé got the hang of it ..not exactly as described in help but it works now..and maybe I had an unmarked selection option so it didn´t select the whole geometry when trying to select the grid.
Anyway I got it working and It´s really sweet and powerful.
and to change geometry type to whatever and lsystems.
Now I need it for lightwave to..
Someday maybe when they connect their new nodes to the object creation id perhaps. and starts to make it parametric as well.

Have you downloaded the latest build of Houdini? We get new versions almost daily… I remember that at one point the shelf tool had been changed and was not functioning as intended… but I just tried it in today's build and there shouldn't be any problem

put down a grid
put down a box
with the box still selected, click copy to points
select grid
press enter

should work as expected.

Nope Allegro that doesn´t work either, neither the f1 help or other instructions works as it should..I must make sure to have the latest build
Now…I need to updatefrom Pc 32 bit Houdini 9 public beta build
9.0.653.

I tried to update from the program, and I do get a lot of builds to choose from Not sure what build to select?
production build windows xp 9.0.747
or the Daily Build 9.0.758 ..my guess the daily build?

Just wondering so I don´t encounter installation problems if the versions there isn´t for the public beta build?

The production build is probably what you're looking for. Also, H9 is no longer in beta [sidefx.com] - it's gone gold.

yeah..okey..so what does that mean?
Can I download the production build or not? And get it to work with
the free open beta build ?
or are the beta builds not open anymore?

or just simply..wheres the latest Free open public beta build?

Go to the Downloads page and download the latest release. I don't know what you mean by “work with the beta” though - just run the latest cut. It will load any older hip files you might have saved. If you don't have a full license, the production build runs in “Apprentice” mode - you can get an apprentice license to run it. Don't mix and match releases.

The beta is over, but we always have a free Apprentice version of Houdini.

Aha..oki doki..I accidently posted on a different thread ..replys that was ment for this thread..but to sum it up
the problems that I had seems to be the same as described here

http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=153835 [3dbuzz.com]

seems that something was wrong in some builds about the copy to point tool and it just gave the standard copy result I guess.

and since the latest build links were broken I haven´t upgraded yet..will try tomorrow..it´s late swedish time now.
Anyway..I followed the tip in the above thread and it worked just fine.
