hey i am trying to reproduce the 3dBuzz Tornado
and ther is a point where Houdini crashes everytime.

fairly simple setup:

create a circle -> change it to Polytype-> connect
a sort OP to randomize the Points -> connect a Points OP

now when i change the $TX to

$TX + (rand($FF *$PT +40)-0.5) and copy that to $TY
and i click into to change smth in that expression boing
Houdini crashes with a fatal error.

i tried it several times it happens evertime !

so my quest -> is it a bug ?
and
(for those who knew the 3dBuzzTut)
is there an other way to create randomized particles sticked
to the end of a nurbs curve so i can move the emitter with the
topPoint?

thanx a lot

I get this a lot too. Right clicking on the expression and using the edit expression editor works with more stability for me.

Wow, I've done the equivalent of that so many times over the years on Linux and never experienced a problem like that. I just tested now on win64 and it's fine. What platform? Version of Houdini?

To clarify - forget the tutorial but you get a crash describing simply what you've listed? Or do you need to have it driving a particle system and you're displaying that?

Cheers,

hi!

I'm getting the crashes too, every 5 minutes, simply editing the expression on a point node, a bit annoying.

I can't reproduce either. If anyone can come up with a consistent crash then submit the bug and hip file. There's link above: Support > Submit H9 Bugs.

For what it's worth, I'm noticing this on my home computer as well… I've come across this twice today trying to do a bbox expression.

On a translate node for example, I'll type
bbox(“../NODE”, D_XSIZE)

when I press enter after typing the expression *sometimes* Houdini will crash. But not always. I'm normally good at finding the reproducable ones… but this one is really hit and miss…

my machine is:
windows xp 64bit
Nvidia quadrofx 4400 (latest driver)
xeon quad core

the crashlog seems pretty short

Installed 9.5.241. Looks like it may be fixed now.

I wish.

I'm still getting it in 9.5.251. XP64. Nvidia 178.13.

I've been trying to zero in on what makes it break, but everytime I attempt to reproduce the crash reliably so I can submit a bug I get nothing.

you edit your expression, push enter, and presto.

In a typical day I'll get about 20-30 of em'.

Well at least I've finally been able to repro, it's so oddly sporadic. Just once, but it was the first time I tried actively to spring it. Positively windows-related, since I've never seen anything like that on linux(triggered it on vista 64, 178.13). Can't help but think it's a driver issue. Being sporadic, and in my case triggered with a brand spanking new hip, it's got to be some sort of timing problem.

Cheers,
