Hi

I'm trying to install the 3D Strange Attractor otl file, but Houdini Apprentice won't allow it and comes up with the attached message

My procedure is by going to…

File / Install Digital asset library

Does anyone have an answer? Am I going about this the wrong way?

Many thanks in advance

Rob

Maybe the space in the path is confusing Houdini?

…hmm no, I've just tried eliminating the ‘SPACE’ in the path

As well as placing it in my Library/Preferences where there's a designated folder for OTLs

Thanks for trying though! Any other hints or suggestions?

The install dialog doesn't list the contents of the specified OTL either, which reinforces the idea that Houdini can't seem read it.

You might try making sure you have access to the path in question. You can also navigate a terminal to that directory and try using hotl -b <file> to make sure it's a valid OTL file.

Hi, thanks for your response, in answer to your questions..

The otl file was downloaded from the sidefx site here…
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=148 [sidefx.com]

So I presumed it was legit and would contain the necessary content.
As regards to access to the file - Yes I have access to it as it's on my desktop, I've also tried moving it to different locations to see if that helped such as the designated OTL folder in Prefs

As to the Terminal solution which you're suggesting then I'm a bit out of my depth as to what to do…I've tried Copy and Pasting your line command into the Houdini Shell Terminal (is this right?) with the file name in but it came back with a message…

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

And I have no idea what this means - sorry I'm not very techy when it goes beyond a UIs
:?

Any other suggestions please?

if you got the otl from the Exchange then you have to uncompress it…it's a .gz file:
3D_StrangeAttractor.otl.gz

winzip or winrar etc will unpack it > 3D_StrangeAttractor.otl

1. What is the size of that file? It sounds like a common problem with SESI Exchange, which sometimes refuse to give you a file itself giving some sort of empty file. We call it 47 bits syndrome

2. I've just checked and Strange Attractors behaves fine, though it' a tiny otl also. You did extracted it from *.gzip file, right?

3. Can you open it in any text editor like vim or nano? What you see inside?

4. “hotl” is a standard Houdini's tool you call in system terminal not Houdini's one. With flag -b it validates otl file.

in answer to your questions.

1) The file is only 4k in size

2) No the file didn't download as a ZIP file, it downloaded as a straight file with a Houdini icon

3) I opened the file in the most basic of Mac Text editors and it showed a file in what appears to have been written in Klingon, here's a sample..

but was there any code readable for humans, there should be.

Anyway, try this, it definitely works for me! (unzip it! )

SYmek,

Perfect, that worked as easily as I expected it should've

Thanks very much! Any clues as to why I might be downloading a duff version?
