Hi All,

I just downloaded the latest Ubuntu 64 bit version of Apprentice and I'm have some pre-installation issues. I know I'm doing something extremely stupid, but I will need somebody to shine a flashlight on it for me, as I am at a loss.

If I try to unzip it I get the following:
gunzip houdini-10.0.595-linux_x86_64_gcc4.3.tar.gz

gzip: houdini-10.0.595-linux_x86_64_gcc4.3.tar.gz: not in gzip format

if I untar and unzip I get the following:
tar -xvzf houdini-10.0.595-linux_x86_64_gcc4.3.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

I also tried to unzip with 7-zip in windows and I got the same result.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

You might want to check if your download was corrupted for some reason.

Go into the directory where your download is located and type
md5sum houdini-10.0.595-linux_x86_64_gcc4.3.tar.gz

It should spit out a number.. then you compare that number to the one that drops down next to the original download link on the sidefx-website, when you click on the “MD5” link there.

If the numbers differ, then something went corrupt while downloading, you should re-download.

Thanks for the speedy reply, Protozoan.

I did a md5sum and got the number, but I don't see any md5 link on the download page. I did a search with Firefox (ctl-f) just to be sure I wasn't looking past it. Are you sure it is on the download page?

It *should* be there, like on the following picture.. a clickable next to the actual download link.

Interesting. My page looks like this: no MD5 link

Well, maybe I could just download again. I had suspected that it may be a corrupted file, so I downloaded a few times already. And I downloaded two separate Ubuntu 64 bit versions. I had the same results each time (gzip error). I've downloaded and installed Apprentice many times in the past without a problem.

If you go to the downloads page and Login (option will be bottom-left), you'll get the page shown by protozoan… i.e. from here:

Cool. Great. I don't think I would have found that. Thank you both.

I have three downloads of the file
houdini-10.0.595-linux_x86_64_gcc4.3.tar.gz
according to the MD5 link
all three are the correct file size
all three have the same incorrect md5sum

MD5 hash should be
9860646536707136e3db2f04209366d9
my three files are
6964538f18fac856e26c88b51c8a0450

Do I just keep downloading until one comes across clean?

I would wait until tomorrow when folks are in the office. It doesn't look like any of the downloads are working.

Good advice, Alan.
Otherwise I would be repeating the same action and expecting a different result. And that would be crazy.

I can verify this. None of the Win64 downloads I have tried will install. I have an Apprentice HD license, and have contacted SideFX via email. I'm sure they will sort this out ASAP.
It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.

Hi All,

There was a problem with the Houdini downloads over the weekend. This has been fixed now.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Cheers,

That got it. Thank you all. I successfully installed Apprentice last night.
The only thing that was “wrong” was the MD5 number on the web site didn't match. But it installed just fine.

I installed on Ubuntu 10.04 and the only part that I wasn't able to install was HQueue. I think it had to do with me running Python 2.6 rather than v2.5. But I'm not sure. I will see if I can roll-back to Python 2.5 and try to install HQueue again.

Thanks,
