Definitely going to follow this thread, as I'm thinking about an upgrade and I'm running a 1950X from 6 years ago, it's not bad but as we always "need" faster machines I'm interested to see how the M3 Pro will stack up.
I did a CPU benchmark and an M2 Pro was slightly slower that a 1950X, albeit impressive in itself given it's a laptop. I've also heard that you never hear the fans kick in. So it will be interesting to see where the M3 Pro sits, I'd anticipate a 15% increase judging by the M3 presentation the other day.
With all this in mind, what would it be like on day to day usage, and over a year! The 7950X is about 2.5x faster and probably makes more sense to upgrade as a workstation scenario. But I like the small form factor it has to be said.
Will be interesting to see how and what comes out soon I hope I haven't derailed this thread...
Where did you do the CPU benchmark?

that's why we are asking - to know whether this particular development is happening soon™️ or otherwise
In my opinion, based on how SideFX have consistantly delivered over the years, it's a resonding YES. However all I was saying was to fully deliver every feature of an app the size and complexity of Houdini will take a little time. We just need to be patient. From what I am seeing Houdini on Apple Silicon is already very capable. So with every update going forward I think that it is a given that Houdini on Mac Silicon is only going to get faster with all the features operating and running to comparable levels of Houdini on the Intel/Windows platform, for which Houdini has-been developed to run on for decades. The fact Sidefx have delivered Houdini on Apple Silicon shows they're commited to the platform. I guess the only question we are asking here is when are we going to get XPU taking full advantage of the Apple Silicon chiptset! My guess H20.5 or H21.
Heres a video I found on Houdini on Mac Studio vs an Intel Box for anyone interested.
Is a Mac Studio fast enough for Houdini? [www.youtube.com]

osongcgshortsunironically it is already on the new platform, and runs natively. we are asking about XPU acceleration with M-chip GPU.
I presume that with each subsequent release of Houdini for Mac Silicon, more code will get optimised to take advantage Apple's new chip set. It must be a fairly large task to bring a program of the size and complexity of Houdini over to a new platform.
Agreed, Houdini is on a new platform already, but not everything is optimised yet to take full advantage of said new platform or indeed working at all, for example XPU. What I am saying is it will take a little time. There is a difference between having something working and something working and taking full advantage of the system it's running on.

I have Houdini Apprentice installed on my Mac running macOS Catalina version 10.15.7 and Houdini 19.5.303 Apprentice My Mac has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2 GB gpu.
This is a clean install due to issues with my previous installation. The vellum issue I am still having was present in my old installation of the operating system and I was hoping the fresh install from scratch would rectify the problem.
I believe this is an OpenCL issue so I was wondering if anyone else has come across this issue and if there is a work around to this issue that I could implement?
Below are the error messages I am getting:

Just a quick question in regard to Apple's latest chip transition. Not sure if this has been asked elsewhere but does anyone know what SideFX's position is? Will Houdini make it over or is this the end of the road for Houdini on the Mac? As far as I know Cinema 4D is transitioning and there was a demo of Maya running under the Rosetta emulation.

I have the same issue with MPLay stopping rendering frames after a certain number. The number of frames before it stops seems to differ each time. I am running Mac OS 10.12.5. I also seem to have the same problem when rendering frames out do disk.
The problems seems to be specific to a certain file. Other files seem to Play seems to work fine!

Cool, learned something new…
I had no issue going to 4096x4096 (png). So I'm quite sure it's unlimited.
Thanks for the feedback must be just a limitation in the Apprentice version that the Indie version does not have.

If you tell me how you do it, I can test to make sure, but I think there's no limit for still renders on Houdini Indie.

Just create a box, dive into the box SOP lay down a uvunwrap node then right click on the uvunwrap node, select save and then Texture To UV Image. A box pops up allowing you to set the size, name and location of the image. For me using Apprentice it only saves out images up to 512x512. If I set the size to 1024x1024 it will not save anything out.

To be fair Yosemite seems to be quite bad in general for crashing apps and the system in general. Its not good that Apple seem really not to be to bothered with keeping OS X up to date and robust for professional apps considering all the financial and human resource they have at their disposal.
I invested in a late 2013 iMac December last year with the GeForce GTX 775M 2GB Ram. It seems to work ok with only a few minor niggles with Houdini. H14 on my iMac does crash more often than H13 did but its not to the point where its unusable. From skimming through this thread it seems depending on the Mac you have you get a different experience with H14!
The general flakiness of Yosemite has made me think of running Bootcamp with Windows 10 when it is released.

Try doing manual licensing using these instructions:
(except remember to start hkey from the terminal)
https://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=936&Itemid=319 [sidefx.com]
When you get those licenses, there should be TWO of them.
Thank you Edward I am back in business :-) It has sorted the problem.
