The Modeler 1.0 Plugin is really a huge step forward for direct modeling with Houdini. Modeler allows for doing most anything with respect to poly modeling with hotkeys and with minimal attention paid to managing the SOP nodes themselves. This plugin has gone through a lot of iterations but the latest version has a big, instantly callable help screen that lists what each hotkey does. It makes it a lot easier to use than in the past, important because there aren't really any tutorials for it (that I am aware of). The tool though, was clearly designed for speedy polygonal modeling by someone with some proficiency at it. For the most complex and quickest polygonal models I still use 3ds max but I am definitely moving away from max and toward Houdini.

I typed the following into a wrangle to test and it does the correct thing for me:
float target = 1.33440162266;
target *= 1000;
target += 0.5; //allow for rounding up or down
target = floor(target);
target /= 1000;
printf (“ %d\n”, target);
float target = 1.33440162266;
target *= 1000;
target += 0.5; //allow for rounding up or down
target = floor(target);
target /= 1000;
printf (“ %d\n”, target);

Those numbers are essentially zero so your model looks fine. This is a floating point number thing and not a Houdini or fbx thing. Softimage might dislay a perfect zero but that doesn't mean the underlying number is any different.

It is not the same thing but there is really good tutorial from David Kahl on Pluralsight where the course shows how to create a similar environment using VEX. It's fairly complex but worth the time:

Great stuff.
Direct Modeling is an awesome modeling toolset for Houdini and I love the menu system as well for packing a lot of functionality into a small space. Really looking forward to the 1.5 and 2 versions.

I bought a new laptop last year and the best laptops I found with respect to specs/price were the HP Omen laptops. They offer features such as 4k, high-end GeForce GPUs, etc.

I always feel that, for me, big gains in understanding always come from this kind of struggle, and it is always a great feeling to find that insight on your own.

I use a GTX 750ti most of the time to drive a 4k display even though I have a couple of 1080's that I run headless for Redshift and other GPU tasks. I think you'll be fine with a 1050ti.
