Using a tiny grid is a good use of grid snapping and the layout algorithm now supports these grid spacings that are smaller than the tile sizes; the tiles no longer bunch up with automatic tile placement. Look for the fix in Houdini 9!

Houdini takes a background image, determines the short side and scales the image so that the short side attains a certain size. The reason for this is to maximize the background image coverage. In your case, one image happened to have a shorter width than height, and the reverse was true for the second image. Hence, image one was uniformly scaled to match the width and the second image was uniformly scaled to match the height.
You would not have experienced this problem if both images had shorter widths than heights or shorter heights than widths.
Nevertheless, I have submitted an RFE (ID=20973) for a menu to add options to scale by:
1. short side (currently only option)
2. long side
3. horizontal side
4. vertical side
A better RFE would be for 2-D scale and offset parameters.

frac(x) is implemented as x - floor(x).
Due to floating point precision, frac(1.4) does not return 0.4 but a value slightly less than 0.4. Try
echo `1.4-floor(1.4)-0.4`
or better yet
echo `1.4-1.0-0.4`
now try
echo `2.4-2.0-0.4`
and
echo `3.4-3.0-0.4`
Notice that for 2.4 and 3.4, you get a value slightly positive while for 1.4 you get a value slightly negative. When you feed these frame values into your expression, you get values equal to 1 and slightly less than one respectively for the blend factor. The Sequence Blend SOP did not handle the slightly less than 1 case. This is now fixed in 8.0.452 (Bug ID=20924).

The window focus bug sounds related to Bug ID=20856: Upon startup, warning message windows appear behind the main Houdini window. These message windows take the keyboard focus. If you were unaware that a message window had opened behind the main window, then you may mistakenly think that Houdini was frozen.
