You may only get biased opinions here, it's a Houdini dedicated forum, after all.

Your self description sounds like Houdini fits your profile exactly, though.

Lighting is in obj - or where you want it to be.

You could pull your scene (or parts of it) procedurally into Solaris and continue to work (incl lighting) from there, if you want. I am no expert with that, but I tried it and it worked pretty well. For my kind of projects usd workflow is over the top, generally. But, imho it's by no means complicated to go there if you need some features from it without building everything in Solaris from the ground up, first.

Can't comment on the other topics. But you can use karma without touching Solaris. Have a look: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/out/karma.html [www.sidefx.com]

Of course you can.

Try to recreate your workflow in houdini and ask specific questions when you get stuck.

I wonder if your stability problems have something to do with nvidia's drivers for windows since version 5xx. Did you already try to roll back to something like version 497?

I agree.

For letting sidefx' documentation team officially know about that, you should make an rfe, including links to the documentation pieces you would like to be overhauled.

Soothsayer
There's tilting in the physical lens shader but it only seems to affect the focus plane, so maybe not that useful in your case, however it shows that perhaps the desired outcome can be built with a lens shader.

Interesting. I wasn't aware. Not what I want, but nevertheless thanks for that info.

I still vote for an let's call it 'architectural camera'.

We already have shifting, but tilting for viewport and rendering with an optional decoupling of the transformation of background pictures would be extremely handy when dealing with perspectively corrected background footage.

It would provide direct access to creative possibilities with non screen-parallel DOF, as well.

As always: it depends on what you want to do with houdini. If you're into sims, 64Gb can be limiting with medium to bigger sims. For everything else, it should be decent.

If I understand you correctly, you want to

1. read a text file and extract a portion of it into the rules parameter field.

2. append the rules parameter's string to a text file.

This can be done with python expressions. If you are familiar with python, this is quite easy. If not (and since you're new to Houdini), this route could be quite challenging, I suppose.

Technically, it would be cops v3

I assume, it's a long way to the top and must evolve over the next years, first.

Maybe a bit far fetched but, I always wondered if the logo spiral was influenced by the start of the yellow road in the wizard of oz.

Redshift on amd is coming. You can apply to a closed alpha/beta in their forums.

Redshift RT is in beta and it is promising. As you can use redshift in solaris right in the viewport, maybe this is as close you can get for realtime preview. And for many needs it maybe already enough in terms on quality.

Better contact support. They could do a one-time conversion of your files. Then you can work with Indie instead.

You could pre-process the file with python. Delete the first row and save it to another csv file.

I prepare similar scene in RS, not 1:1 copy but for redshift. Uses same Rhino Geo.
on my 2070 Super + 1070 Ti I have 31 sec.

I know it would be unfair, obviously. But, just out of interesst...

Has anybody of you the possibility to compare the current state of karma xpu to redshift or its competitors, speed wise?
Not that bad at all!
Thx
