Looks good.. However it seems biased, it doesn't seem to take into account anything else.. Just a mention here or there..
I agree but his fur section takes Shave & Haircut into account and compares the uses which is quite revealing.

im getting into shader writing, as a way of understanding VEX more. But VEX is very similar to RSL (Renderman Shading Language), so ive been going through Essential Renderman Fast (thanks to Jeff Wagner's recommendation).
I dont know how close IFD's are to RIB's, i skipped pretty much everything that dealt with RIB files in the book, just got striaght to the RSL lessons.
Rendering and Shading is a big area, its like modelling, you can understand all the tools but you might not be able to make a decent model, that comes with observation and practice.
I would pick a specfic area of rendering, and grow from there.
Anything to do with VEX i would say is a good start as it can really open the possibilities of Houdini, not only in shader writing but also SOP, POP's, COP's, DOP's and CHOP's.

ahh cheers mark.
Hope i can create some decent images, although houdini Fur is good (and there is one project in particular i will use it for), i have a feeling yours is a little more flexible.
thanks again mate, for creating this.

I made a decision to get into shader writing, and i learning alot. This will be something i can learn so much from and see how certain concepts are implemented in Vex or with Vops.
thank you so much SESI, we lvoe you guys for doing this.

Ahhh thanks for much jeff.
At least now i have a starting point. These books are as good as purchased. Well at least it shouldnt be too hard to get Essential Renderman and Adavanced, but i will look for the second edition of that Procedural Texturing/Modelling book.
My goals at the moment, vary within houdini (so much to chose from). I want to try this and try that. I grew up(in the world of CG) as a character modeller so I want to build from that. So shaders, riggin, or procedural modelling is where Im headed.
Cant wait to get stuck in.
thanks again Jeff, and looking forward to the rest of your VOP's series.

Most of the time, for me, i dont want to beg for someone to help me, if i need help though i will ask for it, but I want to find a way to help myself.
From my perspective there are alot of concepts in Houdini that people of certain background will already understand from the word go and instantly have a graps on whats actually going on. I watched pete latest tutorial on a Gas solve and i have to say it was hard getting to the end, simply because i had little/loose knowledge on the subject. I hadnt even heard of an S-noise before.
Is there any material anyone could recommend, on the theoretical side of Houdini, im talking about physics books, math's book whatever. Although i recently purchased a Math's book, that covers alot of topics i never got into and will hopefully shed some light.
Where i can get a god foundation in the concepts that will crop up in Houdini.

I have no problem helping seed these files and if for some reason all the seeders dissapear, people can post in the thread asking for seeders and it can be done. But i doubt there will be a problem. Luxology do it with their video content all the time and they go into the 3 GB range.

i for one would love that, i learn enough from people's files over at odforce, if these complete files were available, that would be awesome, if they also had documentation, that would be a whole other thing. Explaining to users the techniques that might not be so apparent on the surface is always a luxury.
I remember the rabbit OTL a while back and at the time i hardly knew anything about Houdini, but when was following a rigging tutorial i wanted to know the difference in what SESI was doing. (in the end i still didnt know anything but i think today with examples files now, i understand alot more and if it had documentation, it would probably be difficult NOT to understand).
Excellent point.

Hi Mark,
The 32bit Linux seems to only have an include dir and a lib dir, no OTLs, Config, OPlibraries etc…
Cheers,

Pagefan, ive done eveything you have mentioned over and over.
And as for coping the otls. There isnt a single otl in the fuzzy toolkit directory.
Its quite hard to figure out where to put these files, i dont see an GF folder, or even a place to put these SOP's. There are a dozen folders in the Houdini directory named sop, and most are related to the documentation of Houdini and other are samples files that have two or three files in them.
The last thing i want to do is break this installation.
Thanks for the help everyone but it looks like another dead end. It looks like anyone short of a walkthough wont get me far, so thanks for your time.

I agree with symek, although thee is another angle that is being forgotten.
Houdini is a differenet app than most, and alot of people have the perception that Houdini is highly technical and anyone without a computer science degree shouldnt even look at it.
But alot of very smart people here, and on odforce are technically minded. And are able to take advantage of alot of what Houdini can offer them. I on the other hand come from a more artistic background and although i am trying to beef up my technical skills i know that i will never be on par with someone who started off technically and continued to do so for several years.
Kinda like learning languages, once your native tongue has devleoped any other language you leanr will never be as good as someone who is from that country (most of the time, there are quite a few exceptions) .
Plus i dont know the staff count at SESI, and most of all the count on the marketing/tutorial side, because i see tutorials as a way of selling a product pretty much, if you can show how to do something especially in a way that is faster than most apps, it subconsiously tunr into a commerical (in my opinion).
Thats is why i think there needs to be a push on both ends. People who are technical but their skills need to be transfered to Houdini and the Artists who want to make a pretty picture.
I wish i had something to offer, maybe in the future i will, it might not be technically grounded but it would show other artists currently using the product and others that are looking for an alternative, it could be a viable option.
For now though im still going to post questions and hope for answers on the forums.
Just look at my histroy with fur, still trying to get that damn stuff under my control.
by the way, i hear the presentation coming up with Mario and maybe a few others will be screen captured, i think this is a massive step forward, although i doubt i will gain much knowledge i know that other will and im all for that.

tried that, didnt work. If sourced the fuzzy, ive copied it to multiple locations, /opt/hfs9.1.179 … and to the bin and houdini folders just in case.
When i source it wrong it tell me, but when i get it right, all is right untill i startup houdini and its not there.
You couldnt post a screenshot, of the process you made in the terminal, and what directory the file is, i get the impression that ive done it all wrong but it isnt saying so.
cheers.

We're hoping to do a screen capture of Mario's lecture.
Even better.
I own 2 sets from Alias, Hyper-real model/body/face rigging and Jason Schliefer and although the video of the instructor, usually the deer-in-a-headlight view is cool and/or funny, its not required.
A screen capture is whats really needed.
Awesome, cant wait now. But i will try to subdue my hopes because people are busy and i know it wont go up 10 minutes after the presentation. :p

Hi guys,
Well, since the introduction of the help documents, i have no doubt gained soem understanding of the Houdini Fur procedural and its methods.
I have had some success with its workflow, you can see the results of my site.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/769/mousefurtest04xc3.jpg [img132.imageshack.us] <— Last Know Decent Result
But i have come to a dead end and now dont know what to do.
So whats the problem, well..
Since the line sop, copied to the points of the geometry i want to have fur on provides the guide geometry for the fur procedural. I am still left with very limited control.
For that point on i can only control the shape of the fur with Fur Style cvex. This coupled with combed normals provides the direction and style of the fur.
Apart from this i find it very hard to control the actually shape of the fur, the only way i can see it to insert and edit sop before the guide geometry is written out into another OBJ. But the edit sop is quite cumbersome and doesnt provide a true mirror when i use it to manipulate the copied lines and the sculpt feature always leaves me pulling my hair out or starting over.
I have tried Mark Visser's Fuzzy Toolkit, but i cant even get that to run, once i install on my windows xp installation, drop the fur sop and select visibility it crash houdini and i am forced to exit (Segmentation error or something), i tried to install it on ubuntu and it teel me everything has been installed and variables have all been soruced etc and when i jump into Houdini there is no Fuzzy toolkit pulldown. I am using the correct builds of houdini and yet things are going pear shaped.
http://forums.odforce.net/index.php?showtopic=6658 [forums.odforce.net] <– Fuzzy Toolkit
I have emailed Mark, but alas no answer.
So what to do now, normally to gain knowledge about houdini, most of the time i am not the only one who has the same problem, and therefore can find the solution somewhere on the forum. But i have searched the forum and not only does no one else have any problems with Houdini fur i cannot find anyone else who has had considerable success, which is weird (at least here or on odforce).Even the image on the front of the website is nice, but the fur's shape looks like it was made with the fur style cvex. I understand people wanting to protect their files, or they are using it under an nda project but no one else posting their images with it?
I hope someone outthere can help me out in how to actually sculpt fur, thats the solution im looking for, and not just combing directions.
thanks for taking the time to read this, forum memeber and SESI staff. You help/work is always appreciated.

It would be awesome, if the video was free, considering it was a free event, but bandwidth and time costs.
I think torrents could be a viable way for distribution, Luxology do it all the time, especially with the conference/live demo's.
Not only will this help existing users, but anyone notice as media content increasesm, so does the users, the interest and more importantly potential client base.
This is all obvious, but maybe i feel its needs to be reitterated.
Houdini is difficult to learn at times, especially if you cut your teeth on something else, given the right background i would imagine it wouldnt be so much of an issue.
But whenever there is help, people will come.
Wolfie, what are you doing next month?

i second that.
Cool that mac users can use houdini now, although they kinda always could with boocamp. But now i guess things are going to be much easier for them.
