As for motherboard, I had good experiences with Supermicro [supermicro.com].
Their cases are also excellent. The one I have is a bit noisy, but more recently they seem to have introduced workstation oriented cases which are quiet.

Folks,
There is already a “please port Houdini to OS X” thread [sidefx.com]. Can we limit the comments to that thread?
kthxbye
Indeed. Can an admin join the two threads please?

Hello,
What OS (XP32, 64, vista?) and what graphic card?
Also, as a suggestion, you might try downloading the latest 9.1 beta build from here:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_download&Itemid=208 [sidefx.com]
scroll down to daily builds and choose 9.1.133 (or whatever is the most recent).

digitallysaneI just received an email from Digital Tutors and they are working to solve the problem. Seems I judged them too quick, for which I apologize.
Unfortunately Digital Tutors have a very strange policy of choosing the countries they ship for.
They also have a customer support department who prefers not to answer questions asked by potential buyers.

I don't get the hard-to-use PRman in H9 thingie. Houdini has a very good interface to PRMan and also an integrated PRMan shader editor.
I think it might be more useful to spend a little time trying to get familiar with the Houdini -> PRMan stuff than moving data among packages.

aidanodrThe problem is they have a selection of countries they accept payment from, and Romania is not among them. It's exactly the download version I'd like to get, but for that I need to make an account and to be able to pay.
Why dont you just buy the download version. No shipping issues I dont think. Of course I am assuming you have decent Broadband. Only difference is NO Box, thats it.
It's the first provider where I encounter such medieval problems.

Houdini Lounge » Export Obj file Problem

I suppose you animate the sphere object (at the object level) then go into SOPs and export the geometry from there.
However, the geometry inside the object is not animated (you are basically animating the geometry container, in a “Scene space”. Inside it, in the “Object Space”, the geometry is still).
To be able to export that you should import you object animation into SOP space, and you'll use Object Merge SOP for that.
Create a new object, place an Object Merge SOP inside and then put . in the Transform Object field and the path to your object in Object 1, and export that to a geo sequence.
Check the help for Object Merge SOP for more info.

1. The tone of your post sucks. If you expect help, be polite and constructive in your posts
2. The “wait two weeks for an answer” is simply a lie in order strengthen your already arrogant and impolite post. I don't think that someone has *ever* waited much for an answer on this excellent forum
3. I had never, ever, had any problem with Houdini licensing, commercial or non-commercial, locked or floating, on XP 32bit or 64 bit, Ubuntu Linux 32 or 64 bit. The licensing procedure looks very fast and painless to me, there are also FAQs on this site and there is also support available for licensing problems even for Apprentice users.

Welcome,
Mantra, the renderer, will take full advantage of the 4 cores. Also, some parts of Houdini are multi-threaded (VEX, fluid solvers, compositing) so those will also take advantage of a quad core.
As for graphic card, the first thing is to avoid ATi. A GeForce 8800 is OK, no big problems. It seems problems can appear and dissapear depending on the version of the driver, but no show-stopping stuff.
Of course, a Quadro wil probably work better, but it'll cost 3-5 times more.
As for OS, the best for Houdini would likely be a 64-bit variant of Linux. SUSE and Ubuntu seem the most favored by the Houdini community. I also had good results with 64 bit Windows XP. Don't know about Vista.
Good luck

In the Channel (Graph) Editor, if you hold MMB on the vertical line which represents the current frame and move the mouse, it will hold the values of the scoped channels. You have to alt-click to set a key, though.

Houdini Lounge » Houdini printed manual?
- digitallysane
- 1192 posts

some people actually like printed manuals….i read them in bedThen those “some” people should print the manuals themselves, according to their need.
Almost no software comes with printed manuals nowadays, but they include PDFs so the user can print the parts he needs. Those PDFs would be nice to have, I agree.
Printed manuals cost money, so this will increase the price of the product (for everybody, including the users who don't need/want them).
Also, making a layout for something like this is not a “1-hour job for a secretary”. It involves resources and time, both of which can be more usefully spent on something else, like more help docs or more video tutorials.

el_diabloNot at all. XSI comes in a small box with 2 DVDs, a dongle and a leaflet with contact and support info. And because it's boxed, I had to wait 4 or 5 weeks for its delivery.
XSI comes in a package box as well as Maya with numerous books etc.
Compare with Houdini which gives you temporary licenses the moment you order it, so you can get started right away.

I model in Houdini. There's nothing you *can't* do in Houdini, modeling wise, but it's not so streamlined as other modeling software.

I do hope SESI doesn't waste resources (and trees ) by printing a manual which only few people will actually need and use.
However, I think it would be a great idea to offer in the Help Browser a feature for exporting the help contents to a structured, bookmarked PDF.
Once the PDF exists it can be easily printed if one needs a hardcopy.

Or you can simply draw a curve, set to polygon mode and with “closed” on, and maybe with snapping on to snap some of it vertices to existing geometry.
A closed curve is a “face” (or polygon) in Houdini, and an non-closed one is simply an open polygon.
