I had previously corresponded with tech support over houdini crashes with directory search paths, and was told to make sure that in my preferences>general user interface>file choosers that I set it to “houdini Chooser Only”. That fixed a problem where opening Image Viewer or rendering to mplay would crash Houdini.
I have another issue that Houdini doesn't seem to be able to write to directories in OSX. I can right click a node and save geometry, but the other ways of writing geometry - rendering to geometry or a file node set to write, don't work. I noticed that the directory tree looks invalid (see attachment). Please help. Thanks.

You are right that I have a type called Driver/ifd in red. I deleted it. Just out of curiousity, how did that get created? Should I just use the default location when I create another digital asset?
The file I attached above was the original Houdini file, not the digital asset. In that file, I could right click the subnet called “chair” and Create Digital Asset. I saved the Houdini file before, not after doing this, so that I would still have original Houdini file. On my HD, I have one file called “chair.hiplc” and another in the same directory called “chair.hdalc”

I think they are object HDA (see original houdini file that I can right click the subnet to save as assset). I have been saving them as “Macintosh HD/Users/isleofgough/Documents/Houdini/chair.hdalc”. As mentioned, I can open them by “file>Import>Houdini digital asset” but not through network view.

I can create digital assets and save them in Houdini Indie, and they have a hdalc (not old otl) extension. I can import them using file>Import>Houdini Digital Asset, but they do not show up as an option in the network view. How do I change the path so that they show up in the network view? Thanks.

I would think that would be done with a volume trail. However, I am not very good at this (see my recent post).

Thank you so much for doing this. It looks like you put the scattered points in the center of the volume to make it work. I wonder why this was not necessary in Sidefx's videos https://vimeo.com/162213251 [vimeo.com] and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVbcF8g-Raw [www.youtube.com] at time 31:34.

I am trying to follow along with the volume trail tutorial from Sidefx (youtube and vimeo) and everything works well until half way through. For some reason, the volume trail does not generate correctly. I've rechecked the steps and deleted and recreated the volume trail node, and it does not work. Would someone mind checking the file to see what I did wrong in the last step (selecting volume trail rather than volumevop1? Thank you.

Creating an environmental file did not work, but what did was to select the Houdini Indie executable and right click to get properties. Then set to run in low resolution mode.

Technical Discussion » Jerking endpoints on animation

Thank you so much! That makes complete sense, and it fixes it. One other issue: is there a way to alter the ramp so that it is a curve rather than linear between points, so that it is smoother? I assume one could write an equation based on the sine wave, but is there an equivalent of bezier points on a ramp?

I asked this on the Indie forum, but this might be a better place to ask about why endpoints jerk with animating a curve. I have attached a Houdini problem that has the problem and an equivalent C4D file that works. However, since Houdini allows me to extrude groups after creating the sweep, I would like to use the Houdini version going forward. Any suggestions on where the error is on the endpoints? Thanks.

I will look at the thread you mentioned using a polyline for skinning. It is easy to add a ramp parameter to the animated curve (see attached), but it still jerks around on the ends when animating. I have attached a similar file from Cinema 4D that was a whole lot easier to create, and allows bezier curves along the ramp equivalent (and there is no jerking). If any one knows how to stop the strange motion at the endpoint, I would appreciate it. (attachments: Houdini file with ramp and animated curve, C4D file with equivalent - requiring studio version).
Edit: solved in technical discussion forum by helpful member. I specified distance between points on curve, so as curve changed length, number of points changed. Solution was to resample based on number of points, not distance.

You will need both an add node and a polyspline node. If you download the file in my question above about closing the ends of a sweep nurb equivalent, you can see how I connected points with add and polyspline nodes.

I agree. There are great things about C4D like ease of modeling, stability, no render size limit, its ability to bring in illustrator files, etc. However, Houdini is a lot more powerful for complicated cloned animations, fluids, smoke, etc. Things like adding procedural extrudes in Houdini solves some of the problems in C4D. The ability to add nodes to materials in Houdini is awesome. The two programs have different strengths and weaknesses, and the best world would be if they could be used together. It is about time for a C4D update, and I'm hoping they will add a plugin for Houdini 16 engine.

I am trying to replicate in Houdini what is called a tracer object in Cinema 4D, to animate what is called a sweep nurb in C4D. For some reason, I cannot get the ends to close, even though I selected “skin with autoclosure” in the sweep box. I am attaching the file. I tried a great many ways of animating the curve, and this works (with the exception of closing the ends). What am I doing wrong? Thanks. I can add a polycap and fix this, but why isn't the autoclosure working itself? Also, why does the animation at the end stutter during playback?

The solution from Sidefx tech support (Silvina) was that in the preferences of Houdini, one needs to select “houdini chooser only” under Edit ->Preferences->General User Interface -> File Choosers. Selecting “Mix” or “Native” not only crashes Houdini Image Viewer but also loading files in MPlay in Houdini itself.

new iMac 2017, 500 GB SSD drive, 64 GB RAM, Houdini 16.0.633 on OSX 10.12.5 routinely crashes opening Houdini ImageViewer or in Houdini Indie, selecting Render>MPlay>LoadDiskFiles. Please help. Thanks.

I am running Houdini Indie on a iMac 2017 with retinal display, and even with setting it to high dpi, the icons are still too small. I have read that one can add the command export HOUDINI_ENABLE_RETINA=0 to the houdini.env file, but I do not see it anywhere on my Mac (and I have checked the user library preferences for this tile). Is there something I need to do to create the environmental file, so that I can add this line? I have tried opening the houdini terminal and typing in:
export HOUDINI_ENABLE_RETINA=0
houdini
but that opens the wrong version of houdini. I would like to set houdini to not use retinal display for all sessions. I would appreciate your advice. Thanks.
