Hi edward,
Thanks for your reply, that should explain the problem since I did fiddle with the Python Path at some point.
Will let you know how it goes and thanks again
UPDATE: The problem was in the PythonPath as you suggested, all is fixed now.
Thanks again!

Hi guys,
Struggling with this one, I am running 13 apprentice without a problem but somehow H14 doesn't want to show the shelves.
This is the error I am getting on the terminal:

Thanks for your reply.
Yes that's exactly what I need the alpha of an object that's inside a glass sphere.
However the method you are suggesting implies I pipe a parameter via the “interior objects” shader, when is actually the sphere outside who has the refraction shader.
I've tried it anyway but it doesn't work, since it wont consider refraction.
any other ideas?

Hi Tomas,
Thanks for your reply. I get it now, if I want to divide some particles in two “groups” and control them separately I need to create 2 streams. The first one selecting all particles, and the second selecting a portion of them. I then can add popforce to each stream and they wont affect each other
correct?

Hi!
If you open houdini, you will find on the right top corner a button. once you press it, the docs will open on the right side of your layout.
Now if you search for something like “revolve”, you will find some examples at the bottom of the page. You can Load them into a new scene, or Launch them into a new houdini session.
Stick with it, it takes some time to get used to but will pay off!
Best,
Cris

I agree: No.
At least not at the beginning.
It's a bit what happens between After Effects and Nuke. In AE you have a “working” comp in no time, slap an AO, a couple of effects and of you go.
In nuke you need to build the tree, spend a lot of time organizing it. Further down the line you appreciate this extra work since it gives you flexibility to make precise changes and not loose your mind. Much easier than making changes on a big AE comp, IMHO.
This quote comes to mind:
Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.
With aftereffects you start chopping the tree straight away.
All this setting up do come with some benefits, as you will be able to create library of assets which you can reuse.
I've seen very fast houdini users, if you can be bothered to put the extra hours to get to that level. Learning houdini is not free, at comes at a price of time.
Is this the right tool for the kind of work you do? Only you can answer that.

Hi guys,
Attempting to do something with particles in H13, but I am struggling a bit with the logic of streams.
In the attached example you will see I create a second stream, and change the color of a percentage of particles.
What doesn't make a lot of sense to me is if I now then add a force to stream 01, it affects both streams. Even if I specify
on the force to only affect stream 01.
Can somebody explain me why this is?
Thanks,
Cris

I guess this is where the workflow differs a bit from the softimage way.
In my case I am using zbrush so each rock has a different diffuse/disp. I also like the possibility of tweaking the materials separately. In this case the rocks are on the beach, some have strong specular (wetmap), some don't. Some are close to camera, so I need more detail etc. I guess another route to make it a bit more procedural is to use tokens ROCK_01>ROCK_01_MATERIAL. etc
I could have done it in one material, but don't think it really matters as much to me at this stage (just learning as you can see).
However, in a commercial pipeline you need to give all 3d artists some freedom, I couldn't possibly police every single shader, for every single asset with displacement to make sure the Occlusion shader is wired in correctly and with the correct values. You can see how that could very quickly turn into chaos.
This is the beauty of partions overrides in softimage, you plug the AO as a surface override on a “group of objects” level, it doesn't care what shader each object has applied locally. This is extremely important when you want to keep displacement values consistent across all AOVs.

That's an awesome example Andy, thanks a lot. I guess when using displacement this would be a good route to take.
The only issue is that it forces this workflow deep inside the assets, which could be a problem when working with multiple assets. Not a deal breaker but a consideration.
Softimage would just allow you to be messy (different shaders from different users), and then fix it all with an override at the end.

Ok, finally able to post again
If I have for example a set of 10 rocks each one with it's separate material applied as a node. They all live under the same object to make it easier to manage.
The Beauty is looking good, each one with their zbrush displacement map.
I now want to create an ambient occlusion pass of this rocks keeping the displacement setting.
I've tried doing a new take, and applying a material to the object where all rocks live, but it doesn't take it into consideration and just gives me the material applied as a node. Is this not possible with takes? would I have to do an override for each rock?
This is extremely easy in xsi, just override the surface port of the material with the occlusion.
