Just as a hint
Yes, Houdini can do this
But is it necessary?
It might be worth it for you to parent some non-deforming geometry (your proxy rig) and use that instead

you could also link up a bunch of Mantra nodes in a chain where each node is set to render a specific frame. Simply click render on the last in the chain and they'll all render.

This is a known issue which is being worked on.
Aside from having a higher density mesh on your surface/more particles… there's not really anything you can do.
You could manually delete those polygons on given frames as well.

RBD fracture and RBD Glue both require that your geometry has been placed in groups.
Have you done this?

I don't know if you're geared toward video tutorials or not, but there are a good number of video tutorials for houdini 9 here on the site in the Learning section.
Digital Tutors is currently working on H9 videos as well and has released a few free ones on their site.
Last I heard 3DBuzz is also working on a whole series of videos.
The DT ones are actually pretty beginner friendly. I might suggest starting there.

you could also link together a chain of mantra nodes, each set to re-render specific frames. simply render the last node in the chain, and it will do all the others as well.

I think the idea, is that if you're modeling, and you want to go back and forth between polysplits, and extrudes and such… the shelf is faster than tabbing and typing…
I haven't used any sort of a search feature for the shelf other than my eyes.

Might even be nice to have multiple columns to show stuff from the object level as well as the current context? I don't know how that would work with the tabs and pinned/unpinned stuff though.

Have you downloaded the latest build of Houdini? We get new versions almost daily… I remember that at one point the shelf tool had been changed and was not functioning as intended… but I just tried it in today's build and there shouldn't be any problem
put down a grid
put down a box
with the box still selected, click copy to points
select grid
press enter
should work as expected.

if you're asking how to apply materials to a dopnet, the answer is you don't
It's generally a bad idea to attempt to render dopnets, instead you should be importing the geometry or visualization of your dynamics into a geometry object and applying materials the way you would to any other object.
Try using the shelf to convert a sphere into an rbd object to see the workflow for bringing objects out of dops.

Most (all?) of the developers read the forums, so if you post here, even if they do not respond, you will be heard.
Segmentation Faults are, in simple terms, crashes that happen when you do certain things in a particular order because a typo in the code prevents the software from knowing what to do.
Knowing that you had a Segmentation Fault is not enough to know how to fix your problem. If you can figure out specifically what you did that caused the segmentation fault, and can make Houdini crash by doing the same thing more than once, then the developers can figure out what part of the code they need to fix.
If every time you attempted to rotate a camera, you had a segmentation fault: if you let us know that that was the problem, then the developers can fix the problem. But if instead, you simply tell them that Houdini crashed, without telling them what you did, they will not know what to fix.

I'm sure the developers could be much better able to help if you were clear about what you were doing that produced the error during your massage.

Don't expect to learn 3d from the undergraduate program at Sheridan. You will get a very strong emphasis on drawing; which may be exactly what you're looking for. But the computer class is becoming increasingly limited.
Honestly, I'd say that the gnomon dvd's are your best solution at getting computer knowledge.
