Houdini Lounge » Anyone tried a Surface Book with Houdini 16

Anyone tried this? I like have a portable work computer where I can start projects and tinker. Then I move it to my work station or grid markets. I need to find a new ergonomic option that is portable and semi-powerful. MacBooks seem out of the question due to poor Stability and after exhausting rounds of trying laptops (Man they all suck when used as a laptop and not a faux-desktop). Anyway, so far the surface book seems to be usable as is with no mouse.

Given the memory limitations of the GeForce 1080ti what is the performance difference between the two. Going with CPU upgrade would greatly increase my Manta and Sims. But OpenCL GeForce sims may also be very speedy. Anyone messing with this?

I'm not sure but I would be interested in knowing how your new CPU compares to the performance of your graphics card on sims.

I'm on a 2016 MBP with the Radeon Pro 455 card.
In general, I find things to be quite stable. I do seem to always crash Houdini when I exit the program, but that doesn't affect my work in any way.
And for context, I'm doing mostly VEX and motion graphics stuff, as well as getting into modelling, rigging and animation. Basically sticking to the Houdini Core features and occasional particles. So I can't talk about the stability of any large-production dynamics, fluids, etc. I'm not even doing very much rendering yet.
If I want to do those things more in the future, I'll be investigating using a workstation or a cloud solution. But for now I'm very happy with the experience.
Edit: I'm also just reading up on the fact that official external GPU support is coming to Macos High Sierra. So that might help things in the future as well.
If it's not to much could you test this one file to check if OpenCL works properly? On my Macbook Pro 2012 even with a “Supported” Graphics card OpenCL does not work properly. Basically there is a sim with a viscous fluid. Without openCL functioning properly the fluid splashes like water. But if it does work properly it should like more like honey. I would just like to know if you see a difference in results. Here are some photos and a HIP. Thanks if you can help.

True for 3D creatives maybe but it specs out to a real value for a lot of editors, illustrators, color, mograph users…
The point was today it will be fine, even for 3d folk, but in 2 years it'll be ho hum and in 4 years archaic due it being not upgradable. Also the main issue with iMac is that if the main screen needs a repair then you lose the computer whilst it's away.
Depends, External GPU support could add lots of longevity, especially if GPU enhanced rendering really takes off.

Is this one of the New ones? I have a 2012 and it been perfectly fine until 16 came along. But I am seeing better stability on High Sierra Beta… although the system itself is buggy Houdini has less issues.

Has anyone tried using OpenCL with solvers on this new machine? I have not made the upgrade yet but I am close to it.

I have to poke this in here: although MacOS isn't as good as Windows/Linux it still limps along with brand new support for Nvidia 10 series cards and great Redshift Cuda performance but still suffers a lot of unpredictable crashes in Houdini that appear to happen because of the handles' GLSL code on Nvidia.
The word on the street is that ‘16.5’ is a very lucky number for making handles great again!
I am getting a much better experience in Houdini 16 under the High Sierra Beta… although the system in general can be wildly unstable at times, not recommending the beta.

Sorry I was able to fix the displacement in the SOPS level. My mistake. But that Displace shader has been two days.

Here ya go. I can get things to happen but I just can't get control over tiling on the Displace with patterns. And The proper alignment when uses on a SOP. Thanks for your input. PS I only opened up the scales to peek, No changes.

Does anyone have any advice or info on how to implement the patterns in houdini's Material Context. I am trying to make some Displacement shaders and I am finding that these tools are nothing like noise and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to implement them properly. I am able to get displacements to work but my major problem lies in not being able to change the scale or number of repeats. The built in parameters are not functioning like I would expect. Frequency does not do this… It's rather strange…
Also IN sops the patterns give me Zero value even with a visualize. I just cannot seem to get the patterns to function the way I would expect.

Yes they did remove “legacy” ports and adaptors are required. However, now there is external GPU support so more power can be added.
I hope apple gets on this driver update. Houdini 15 was always stable on the MacBook Pro and 16 is definitely buggy when working in the new Material context. Displacements are not stable at all but Wagner was having issues on the PC in his immume videos. Lends me to think it's a little bit of both.

Are you talking about physically modeling in all those little details? Why not try out displacements?

Thanks for that insite. I considered external GPU as well. It was a half accomplished dream with thunderbolt 2. It does seem to me like Houdini 16 itself has some mac related issues because the 15 releases gave me zero trouble. Cloud is also another approach. Gridmarkets has been good to me. Thanks for letting me know about your experience. It helps.

He says stability issues and a slow GUI. ATI does not even recommend ATI cards.
In my personal experience on the same machine and OS Houdini 16 is not a stable as any of the 15 versions so I am wondering if its an actual MAC issue with the new hardware or is it an issue with the OS X release of 16.
I also wonder about the OpenCL support on these new ATI cards.

I have been using a 2012 MacBook Pro with a separate Nvidia chip for a few years with NO problem with Houdini 14-15 Now the new 16 has been giving me some stability issues but nothing alarming.
A close friend of mine told me Houdini 16 on the latest MBPR with the Radeon Pro 560 has given him some trouble. Is this widespread? Anyone out there tried it?!?! I wonder why things have gotten worse.
I'm wanting to know because I have been planning an upgrade and this seems very disappointing.

What are the requirements to get the UV's to work properly. Evertime I export as a HDA the same asset refuses the work properly. But if I simply export as FBX it works! I'm baffeled.

Did you change your HDA actor type in UE4 to be mobility ‘Static’? Static lighting won't work with mobile actors.
I did a test and Received the same results after changing the actor to Static. The strange thing is I get different results the only difference between the ROOM object is one is exported HDA and the other is FBX.
