pfff Never happy Mr Jesta… As SESI is a little team, I guess it is hard for them to be liable for 3rd party plugin. Like if they should keep my plugins up and running…

Well I think it is a question direct to SESI. When I could have ask directly to the concerned people, I think some of us maybe interested to know the following:
Will Houdini 9 ( Win32 version ) be compiled with VC++ 2003 or 2005? What about 64bit platform?
I am asking this cause I need to ditch VC++ 2003, the work ( the one that brings bananas) I am about to do need VC++ 2005 and there is some clatches, annoying ones! So… can be bothered to keep both!
Now I am only doing HDK for fun ( I know it is sad! ) but I would like to be able to carry on.
Well.. to cut it short.. when can we expect to see Windows Houdini compiled with VC8/VC++ 2005.
Thank You!

Also, Nextlimit just realised RF4 so I dont know if any change has been to the data structure of the *.bin files. It could be a reason it is on hold. Sorry not to be more helpfull.

Well me it is 2 pints… and I dont want Strongbrow or Canadian  cause I am expensive luxury chic monkey.
Well I cant help you on this. As far as I know only Mark Story was/is in charge of the code.
I have the data structure if you feel like writing your own DSO

If you lay down the SOP or the ROP and it crashes, it means that the DSO is not compiled for 8.1
I havent used RF DSO for a while but I would have thought the updated DSO would have been published.

Hi
I dont think it will cost you money. Ok you can say it will if you learn Houdini full time and you can go and work elsewhere
It may cost you some time, but it is an investment. So like everything; pratice until your hand or/and mouse bleeds Dont be afraid to ask if you dont know the forum is here for that.
Put a nice reel together and hopefully a studio will pick you.

Sometimes developers dont see the big picture, and even if it is not meant to be used one way, clever artists/monkeys could make it “meant for it”.
I think it is the beauty of Houdini. If you are ready to get your hands dirty and have an open mind, things can work.
In fact Houdini is a Philosophy!

Hi mmtpour,
If you use particles for your explosion try to use metaballs, there is a help card about to do a shockwave ( I love those help cards…and people think there is no help in Houdini, tttt ). Expand it to 3D and you should get something in no time. Thereafter, you will need to get a shader… smoke type shader with some glow, let say based on the $LIFE attribute of the particles and/or any customized attribute.
I am not saying it is easy, some trial and error is needed there.

First thought on seeing those drops, Wolfwood thought the same: “hmm, improved metaball support…”.
Or worse.. made with another package… and imported to houdini!

I would just add that if; in one year the SESI team put together a fluid system better than let say Realflow! It would be wonderful! and I will “tire mon chapeau” once more to SESI…

olala… if they do well done to them… They may surprise us again, although good Fluids ask some time to be developed properly. Better to wait and have something solid, not like certain schmsoftware I wont name
But as I have been told in the past… as long the result is there, we dont care how you do it!
Also, it will surprise some competitors who dont think they can be beaten.

The .dll, will be compiled and thrown to the DSO directory, usually the user local one. But you can specify the directory you want your DSO to be installed with the flag -i (ie: -i . for current directory, or anything you wish ).
As long you declare properly in the operator table function in your DSO, Houdini will pick your DSO. Also you have to make sure that your DSO path is in the Houdini Path as explained in the intro.

It is almost like Linux.
you will have the same organisation from where Houdini has been installed. For example: C:\Program Files\Sidefx\HoudiniXXX\
For example the .h files for the HDK are installed in C:\Program Files\Sidefx\HoudiniXXX\toolkit\include
Otls and DSOs for examples: C:\Program Files\Sidefx\HoudiniXXX\houdini\
But this is what comes with the distribution.
A directory usually is created in C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\houdini8.1
Where there you will put your own OTLs, DSOs, etc but again all this can be configured.
For the .exe files, go to the BIN directory and in a console type the command itself or cmd –help. An usuage message should appears.

Concerning the setting of the HDK on Windows, I posted a new version of the HDK presentation. It has nothing more but an extra page explaining how to setup on Windows and which VC++ version to use as well as how to setup the MCVDir variable.
Again any problem, post a message or a word on the forum.

I confirm, on windows, the HDK will only work with VC++ 2003. There are few thread on the forum about how to configure it. VC++ 2005 or free editions do not work unfortunately.

Help for the HDK:
There is an introduction to the HDK on the exchange then the examples in the toolkit. May seems a little but I think it is a good start. It is better to have quality examples than quantity…. as for example Schmaya, where a lot of their examples dont work as expected… I ve been doing a lot of it lately, unfortunately. But maybe it is because of me.
At the beggining, the HDK looks frustrating but dont let this taking over you. Take a deep breath, go through the lines and look at the Headers too, they are a kind of helpfull and there is always the forum.
Help for Houdini:
I think there is a lot around now, and there are those help cards with the examples which are great. Then after it is all about being “creative” and experimenting…. it is like French cooking or any kind of cooking! Learn the basics and fly like a big boy!
