Fantastic. Thank you!
And, yes. I use the spreadsheet a lot. I think it is a great feature!

Quick question - how can I tell how long a particle has been in a group? I would like to do a group switch after a particle has been in a group for a specified period of time.

Any examples on how to use the point color option of the billowy smoke texture? As soon as I make an object a volume it deletes my point attributes.
Ideally, I'm trying to get smoke to inherit the color of the emitter - for example, an emitter with random colors assigned via a point node.

I haven't adjusted that parameter, as the manual says the default setting is considered fairly aggressive, and I am using some low-opacity particles.
How does Mantra compare with 3Delight in terms of render speed? I haven't set is up on my machine yet - wondering if it is worth the trouble,

Hi,
I am looking for any tips at all to speed up rendering of particles. I am currently rendering my particles as points, with no shadows, and sampling of 1 X 1. The sim/cook time is not an issue here - just the rendering. Since I am pretty new to Houdini, I'm not sure what other factors come into play. I should also mention that all my particles have pretty low opacity - about 5%.
I am getting pretty reasonable times - just looking for any other optimizations I can make to speed it up.

I'm using a VEX Super material. I probably need to override the OGL properties too. Thanks for pointing that out.

I got it using material overrides. Problem is it doesn't display in OGL. Any fixes for this?

How would I go about using animated textures with copy-stamp? Basically, I am copying some grids onto some particles. I have an animated texture I want to use on the grids - but by default, all the grids get the texture at the same time, rather than either getting it at the particle birth point and staying on that frame, or getting it at particle birth point and continuing the texture animation with a new offset from that starting point.

I was able to get permission to post two tests so far.

I'm really trying to get this to look smoother - less grain, but still have an inky feel to it. No large blobby surfaces.

Hi,
I am trying to create an ink-in-water effect with particles. I am pretty happy with the motion of the particles - I am advecting them with a smoke simulation.
My main question is about texturing/rendering solutions. What is working (somewhat) for me is to render millions of particles with low opacity - when they overlap I get nice wisps and details (If I get permission, I'll post a test movie). But, the results are still pretty grainy, like a Krakatoa render - not smooth enough for me, and the render time is quite high.
I'm wondering what other solutions there are for this type of effect - in particular how to handle rendering and shading. Any help or example .hip files would be appreciated.
Thanks!
