when I this particular image it is pointing down X axis, I need it to point down Z. I did not see a way to rotate it, move it yes but not rotate

not so sound insulting but are you starting Houdini with your saved desktop? or is it you select desktop and it isn't saved?

look under your Houdini version folder (where Houdini is installed) ie C:\H18.5\houdini\config there you will see several different files where you can change look
3DSceneColors.bw
3DSceneColors Dark
3DScemeColors light
open these in notepad or wordpad etc and scroll through and see what all is there. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF FILE FIRST that way if it goes awry you'll have a good copy to fall back to

not at computer so not sure of exact file but if I recall there is a .env file in C: . . . \documents\Houdini. there you can edit a number of things regarding desktop

I started Ari Danesh H17 Masterclass, when he bring in an image using heightfield_file his looks like it is in a heightfield node. mine are flat/spiky, it does not matter resolution I bring in anywhere from 1K to 8K it is always same. was there a step he did behind scenes? I have settings exactly as Ari does. I have attached screen captures of what I am saying

I have a heightfield with a heightfield clip, how do I get an object to set on flat surface created by the clip? can it be procedural so if I change the clip object moves with it?

thank you for reply. I could not get it to work at first. I backed up and started again and after third time it magically started working, following same steps. one of the exasperating things I have found with Houdini.

I have a group range with every other poly selected but when I add a polyextrude they lose the selection yet I can still manipulate them with polyextrude, then I try to use scale and nothing happens because they are not selected. so why do the polys lose selection tag when adding polyextrude and how do I get selected polys back? I know I can manually select them but that becomes a PITA.

I use two monitors on NVidia 1660.
I started a terrain project, saved it, loaded it back up. when I move the terrain in scene view (spacebar+LMB) on second monitor the geometry disappears once I release LMB. Keeping file open and changing desktop (to modeling) it doesn't happen, reload my setup and it comes back. I did send this issue to support. just posting here to see if others have had similar thing.

I just downloaded 18.0.562 and it dropped a Houdini Launcher Beta in place of the usual Houdini file. so what is it?

all very cool and long time coming but it is still SUBSCRIPTION and at $720 a year ($60 a month paid annually) three times what my Indie license is. this is reason I left C4D almost 3 years ago and even with all these bells and whistles I won't go back. I am happy with Houdini. I wish Maxon well and I am sure C4D user will love the features

jsmackThank you for reply. I didn't know Redshift was so dependent on exact version.
Most likely no. HDK was changed between those versions. For best compatibility, stick with the same version of Houdini as the HDK used to build the plugin.

I just purchased Redshift, versions in program data show it works with Houdini 0.460 but I am using 0.520? will Redshift still work with this version of Houdini?

Thanks Midphase/Kays, very helpful - improving the textures and getting a proper hdri is where I'll go next. Has anyone had experience with importing models into Substance Painter?
I was aiming to make this as procedural as possible (ie just by changing parameters I get a completely new model), but it may be that ultimately introducing some customisation is where it will need to go.
Any more comments welcome!

same here using 0.498; typing Lab in tab menu only gives these results: Fire Presets, Impostor Camera Rig and LOD Hierarchy.
