weird, i get zip from the houdini console with verbose turned up to 5. I know divesting myself of the softimage way is going to be key to making houdini work for me, but I am surprised that there isn't a window that spits out a running commentary of what your doing in it.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Diagnostic event output from houdini/Mantra?

Hi there,
in Softimage land you get a script window output that can gives you a detailed sort of event list including output from whichever renderer you;re using at the time. Anything like that in Houdini 16? Even if it just spat it out to a text file it would be useful?

First off I have to say I know i'm possibly comparing apples and pears but in trying to learn mantra i'm comparing it with my experience of redshift and arnold (in softimage). Sphere on a grid lit with the equivalent of a domelight with the same hdr hdr, and a peak white plaster style shader, very simple. Arnold and redshift look prety near identical but mantra has a completely different hue. I have to ask why is there a difference? I'm not saying mantra is right or wrong but i would like to know what's in control of the difference.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » my shadows through glass are black.

Rob, thanks for the hip file, very handy. I think I've spent too long with Arnold and Redshift which work straight out of the box but are entirely wrong with this example. Learning Mantra will blow a few rendering cobwebs away.

so I've switched on the fake caustics in the shader, and i now seem to have the opposite problem of no shadow. There is something very faint, but my material is 50% transparent with some green in the transmission so i'm expecting a shadow density somewhere nearish to .5 with some colour to it.

aha, thanks. So a shadow through glass is in fact a caustic? And that's why it's named as a faked one? I need to do more research on material behaviour.

Finally getting some time to dip a toe into houdini, transitioning from soft, and the completely different way of working is giving my brain a much needed workout out, but I've a constant stream of questions and this one I've not been able to answer.
I'm trying to shade some transparent objects, like a sheet of glass but the shadows that are cast by it are black. I'm using H16, the mantra-pbr engine and the principled shader with an area light. Transparent shadows are on in the light, and i can see straight through the glass sheet to the shadow underneath, which is black.
Does this sound familiar? What am I doing wrong?

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Numerical input issue

Hi there, (ex softie here)
learning indie, following along with some tutorials from Rohan Dalvi, going well but I've got an issue i can't fathom. Sometimes when dialing in numbers into a parameter it wont take the exact number I've typed, eg I type 0.036 return and it gives me 0.035999999999999997. This is rather unhelpfull as this is a bevel i'm trying to match with another object which has the bevel offset at 0.036
I'm working at the scale set in the tutorial (making a bus) which occupies around 10 units for the width of the bus.
So is this normal behaviour?
I've clipped out all extraneous stuff and attached a file in the technical desktop.
I would be well chuffed if this isn't something i'm just going to have to live with.

Houdini Learning Materials » component selection question

Hi Mark,
thanks for the info, the version differences are making some online tutorials interesting, especially where particles are concerned, but It's getting the grey matter working.
I'm assuming some of the docs need updating? I'm thinking specifically:
/basics/select
cheers,
Andi.

I'm going through FIRST STEPS - Lesson 2 | UI & Modeling using H14.0.258 Indie, rather than 12 which is what the lesson is in.
I'm in component primitive mode (4 key) and Ari says hit the A key to select all the primitives, but in my set-up it does nothing.
Looking at the hot keys it says A is linked to “/Houdini/Panes/Groups/Select all”.
If I hit the N key then it says “Select All” in the viewport and does exactly whay it says, and the hotkey editor say N is linked to “/Houdini/Panes/Geometry Viewers/Modeling Viewer/Select All”
I'm confused to say the least,
hoping someone can clear this up for me,
cheers,
Andi.

Thank you Jordi, excellent stuff. I think individual approaches to the abstract side of things, philosophies and concept's are the key points that get people going. Being taught how to fish etc…..

Hello Houdini people,
Given that autodesk is killing off the product I've been using since it's inception and it's predeccesor since the late 80's it's time to tool up with something new and given how ICE had become a large part of the workflow in Softimage i would imagine that there will be a massive influx of software refugees banging on your door. I know AD have upset enough soft users to push a big chunk them away from the obvious Maya dinosaur and into the Houdini camp, myself included.
So i'm learning Houdini, and i'll probably have a continual stream of questions so please be gentle.
cheers,
Andi.
