again, no material overrides and bundles with material assignment.
Lets hope for H16.
It's on their list, I'm sure of it

Hi all,
Just a curious question:
Is it possible to open a obj/shop node in a second window/pane automatically?
Imagen the SI material manager, you select a material in your top list, and it will open in the pane below.
Can one mimic this behavior somehow in Houdini? All this jumping in and out of nodes is ….. annoying…. ;-)
cheers!

Hi Werner,
I upgraded my graphic drivers, that seemed to be the culprit at that point.
After that I was able to all the above.
Nice to see a familiar name in these forums ;-)
cheers!

And yes, sticky keys and middle click are some of the useful little nicknack's I miss from SI as well.

Hi Jordi,
Thanks for the reply! I'm working my way through your PDF's atm, they're a great help for sure :-)
You're right about the clusters/materials thingy, but sometimes it's handy to have it in the workflow.
Sometimes it's just a pain to import that piece of geometry, and have to break it up into a gazillion pieces to get started on shading. Clusters will be faster at that point.
But if there's a quick way in Houdini to split up face selections on a geo model I'm happy too.
And I tried setting things up again, but even with the facetSOP it doesn't work. I'm getting patches of color, but not the groups with the proper color. Odd…
cheers!

Hi,
I'm trying to wrap my head around groups and materials.
In Softimage there's clusters (groups of faces), where one can assign shaders too. Removing or adding faces to a group is quite simple, and so change the rendered image.
In Houdini I got so far that I can add a group to a face selection, and create and add a material to the group. I end up witch a bunch of groups with materials applied to them.
So far so good….
What I cannot seem to do is remove or add faces to a excisting group. I tried all dropdown options in the group node, but it seems Houdini doesn't reflect these changes in the viewport.
So I must be doing something wrong, but what?
Also, when I render the object, only some of the faces per shaded group are actually rendered correctly, the rest of the faces stay gray?
So again, I'm probably doing something wrong…
Any help on this is much appreciated!
If this is not the correct way of setting up different shaders on a geo object, I'm all ears for the proper Houdini one ;-)

Hi,
Can you elaborate on that?
Coming from Softimage, I'm having the same issues.
Most important one, how to snap the ‘floating’ pivot (Insert) onto a point or face on the model itself. It seems that is not possible?

Hi,
atm I'm running 14.0.201.13. There's no new Apprentice build yet, so I'll have to wait for a new Production build to arrive ;-)

SI Users » Zooming in/out + panning on Camera backplate, SI style?

HI,
Not used H13, but the H14 camera ‘View’ tab has:
- Screen Window X/Y
- Screen Window Size
You can drag and drop these into the viewport to create virtual sliders.
Now you can easily zoom and pan around in your camera view with a background.
CTRL+MMB on the parameter label in the View tab will reset all to the default value.
To link the ‘Window Size’ values, drag one on top of the other and choose ‘channel reference’.
It would be nice to have this more like in SI, but this works for me too.
hope this helps,
rob

Never mind, figured it out.
It seems the exported hip file with the tracking data has an ‘old style’ roto node, and that one doesn't work properly with the new camera controls, and is missing some other stuff as well.
Adding these in will work as expected.
Although it might be nice to have some kind of shortcut/button to reset the window scaling/offset in one go.
cheers!

Hi,
Does anyone know how to zoom in/out & pan on the camera roto backplate, like we can in SI?
I found some older references to this, but cannot seem to find this in H14.
cheers,
rob
p.s. The Auto-commit preference for keying is evil!!! ;-)

Hi,
Is there a way to keep floating windows (on second screen) open on the same place during sessions?
I tried creating a new custom layout, but that doesn't seem to work, all floating windows end up on the first monitor :-\
It would be nice if size/location would be saved between sessions.
cheers!

Hi,
Is there a way to get Houdini 14 working with a Wacom in -Mouse Mode-?
The mouse is all over the place, even simple orbiting/zooming/moving a scene is going all places.
Clicking buttons or selecting stuff just isn't working. I fear it's the QT/Wacom nonsense all over again :-\
I -truly hate- working in pen mode, so sue me ;-)
But any tips are very welcome, so I can start testing Houdini 14 :-)

Hi,
I think this is the best place to start with this one..
Are there any tuts out there dealing with ICE like setups in Houdini?
With that I mean the basic workflows we have in ICE, but Houdinified.
So:
- basic emission by surface
- pick object(s) or groups for particle emission
- paint in/out emission ‘weightmaps’
- turbulize SRT's and such
- mix several ICE trees
- get certain effects by adding nulls or expressions (delete emission etc.)
thanks for any tips!
