cant argue with that.
I got the tifs working. (i was using an old build of Houdini).
does this apply to houdini HD? If not then i guess it is time to shell out for it.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Tif and Rat problems

Hey guys,
My main problem is i cannot use the tifs i want. It simply says “unable to load texture”.
You can see it isnt the backslash problem
Yet i can manually load it in mplay.
Is this a restriction, because the texture is high rez?
Also i know that using RAT files are more efficient so in an effort to use the iconvert method i come up against a brick wall.
“Can't create output file”
Is this another restriction of Apprentice?
Like I said I can manually load the tif into mplay, but when i save it out it squashes it (non-proportionately) and applies the watermark (which i though that only applies to final render, etc)
The thing is this is a displacement map, so will the iconvert apply a watermark and size the texture down? If so, then how do i use the original tiff because it simple wont load.

i think there would. If it was an option that could be enabled and disabled. and maybe an adjustment in the take list, if you could view takes generated by the wedge so no one gets confused.

ahh tottally get it now.
So if i wanted to wedge by take, it would basically spit out both takes iun sequence, and if i was clever with my naming certin key parameters would be visible if i used the post render script and then if i want to test a few parameters on a single take then i would use another wedge rop and use the wedge by channel method.
thank for you help on this stephen.

Allegro
Wedge wouldn't create a variable out of everything that has changed between takes, but only the values that would be declared in the wedge rop.
ahh thats what i thought. I guess you can rename your takes with descriptive names name then right?
So i dont really understand the “By Take” Wedging procedure.
On the help it says.
Wedge Method
Controls how the scene is varied.
By Channels
Each of the Wedge Parameters is …….
By Take
One wedge is performed for each immediate child of the given parent take. The output driver’s take parameter is set to each child take’s value.
Im not fully clear on that.

great tutorial. Im surprised others have yet to comment.
That watermark post-script is awesome.
You show the method of using the Wedge ROP with parameters, how does it differ when using it with takes.
Will using the $WEDGE with the watermark script automatically show the parameters that have changed between each take? Im not sure on that part.
But great tutorial. Keep it up.

Ive asked this on odforce expecting an answer almost immediately but no one has answered (maybe the more experienced users missed it).
But my question is after all the years i have been tinkering with Houdini one thing i still do not understand properly is displacements. The setup, the workflow.
I understand the way to connect it with materials and applying them to objects. I have no problem understanding to get it work. I just cant get it to work properly.
I dont understand when you render an object with displacement, how do you create more polys at render time? (surely there must be a better way other than using a subdivde sop (with the render flag on) .)
Thanks guys, i really have looked around and opened alot of files and still dont get it. (even in some files, they dont use a subdivide sop yet its very smooth.)

I would happily convert those files for you. It would take no time for SESI to do it (since open office can save to various Office products ie Word, Powerpoint …), but should they forget, shoot me a PM and i would happily convert them for you.
and thank you soo much Keith. I thought it would be too much to ask for some of the others, since they are also of high interest to me. but all of them. WOW, thank you SESI.

On October 19th Derrick Moser will be going through the new fur tools in houdini 9.5 and learn how fur can be customized as it goes through the rendering pipeline and how to use the new CVEX VOP context to build shaders that define the fur's appearance.
I was wondering if this event will be recorded like the other free ones that Mario and Jeff Lait did.
and just like the Fluid tutorials put them up on bittorent. I had no problem getting the fluid tutorials that way and im sure people would love to learn from Derrick.
hope the Houdini gods will let this happen.

I'm sorry I don't have anything to contribute to your solution. I think derrick, sounds right (he should be ), but would it be possible to show your results with your Fur. I would love to see it.

Hey guys,
I'm surprised that no one has commented on the Fur asset in 9.5. I must say they are great. The setup is like what we had to create but much more organized.
anyway, my post about the control of fur.
A lot of controls are of the main direction of the fur and then some frizz.
One thing i am looking into is creating braids. I dont know how to approach it, plus if i wanted to create curls. How would one go about creating that.
Also, Is there any way to use the sculpt or paint node to sculpt the fur midpoint in the strand.
ie the fur is shooting out from the face normal and then I can sculpt the fur drooping in another direction from the midpoint of the strand.
Thanks again guys.
and thank you sideFX.

one place to start is have a look at the Ray sop tutorial.

but there are many ways, more than i know .
hope that helps.

hehe nice.
You do know you might probably be the sole reason for SideFX employees who are wearing Houdini T-Shirts to not step out of their booth next year.
btw just visited Softimage site. Thats a kick ass review of Siggraph, wish SideFX could have done something similar. Makes sense right, because you might be tapping into 1% of people who might buy the product at Siggraph but publishing the events online it widens the playing field. I must admit, Softimage looks very tempting by what i have seen (and that is alot, they have tons of videos on their site), but fear not, im with Houdini for the long haul.

hey guys,
Just have a quick question.
In ubuntu i had edited the Terminal file so when i opened up a terminal houdini_setup and fuzzytoolkit_bash (whatever) would source automatically.
Thing is i want to edit that file and i cant remember which one is it.
I know i added the location at the endof the file, and i got that from the houdini website but i cant find it on their either, it says refer to the houdini_install script or something and when i do that it sends me elswhere.
So all i need is the name and locaiton of the file in ubuntu where i have added houdini_source etc .
Thanks

Then i guess if anyone wants the paper the link is outthere.
I wont draw attention by posting the actual link because that will no doubt be passed around and will get back to the people at acm who will remove the paper.
Although looking at their site, i think it would be a worthwhile investment purchasing some of their yearly compilations of technical papers. alot of ideas and theories that have yet to make it mainstream or have died because no one is willing to develop the ideas.

cheers Mario.
After reading your post i searched one more time, and I found it. The thing is I have the feeling its safe for people to view, because the actual link to download the paper is www.acm.org.
So i would assume it would be ok, right?
Let me know if am in the right or wrong?

Thanks for the links.
But i would like to read the paper, to understand Mario's lecture a bit more. I cant seem to find it, without being a member of Siggraph or something.
