You mean using the Scene View tab menu? Have you tried the context menu on the Scene View?

The split SOP would work fine if the original mesh stayed in tact…or at least had an option to preserve original mesh.
Basically I want to duplicate a primitive selection and be able to translate the new extracted peace somewhere else with one click. I the Extract SOP worked when switching to Create in Context it would be great.
I will submit a RFE, but wanted to makes sure I'm not doing something stupid.

well it stays intact, however not as part of the same flow as split geo
so what you are describing sounds like Duplicate Shelf Tool in Context on selected primitives, which should work just fine
