Solaris and Karma » How are people rendering in Solaris with no AOV support.

The USD/Hydra spec already supports AOVs, there's nothing additional that needs to be done from a DCC standpoint. For example, Redshift3D (a 3rd party engine) already supports AOVs in the Hydra viewport.

Dude, Houdini FB group has been flooded with Volume renders from 3Delight - so much, that they asked some of them to stop.
3Delight is shining with Volume rendering - its really amazing what they've done in that space.

Yeah, but at the moment 3rd party renderers have to port for regular old Houdini, and now create a Hydra delegate.
Except now, when a company invest R&D in maturing a Hydra delegate, that code is transportable to other Hydra host environments, the same as the scene artifact of the USD file, along with other benefits the USD platform provides, for example, every Hydra delegate inherently supports command line rendering, since you can feed a USD file to a Hydra delegate from the command line, without needing a DCC.
I cant remember a time when we've had so many rendering options in Houdini, granted, those Hydra delegates are at varying levels of maturity, but, the journey has just begun.

Ultimately I think if LOPs requires too much USD knowledge I'm pretty sure sidefx will keep banging on the user experience until it doesn't.
I want to chime on this point that was in made here, LOP/USD/Hydra represents a significant bump in the barrier of entry to producing content in Houdini.
It took me a couple months to wrap my head around it, trying to discover why SideFX/Pixar even invested so much R&D into realizing this new context - that's what my comment is based upon.
I think this just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what this technology will do going forward.
But I get it, I see the benefit, I see the philosophy and its a natural fit into Houdini pipeline - and I'm excited to watch this framework continue to mature inside/outside of Houdini going forward - the USD 20.02 spec. update just drop last week I believe.
Still no word on when/if that will be integrated into H18.

Solaris is a dream come true for me. Its still very, very raw - LOPs crashes if you stare at it too long - and I'm not used to Houdini being this brittle. But, its a smart investment by SideFX/Pixar - and it will pay off very nicely in the long run.
The Redshift Hydra Delegate is maturing very, very nicely. Almost catching up to Renderman here shortly.

That SideFX Solaris roadmap would need to be fleshed out and implemented before anyone's market share would be at risk, I'd think.

RPR is very limited right now, as far as the Hydra Delegate spec., I think the only thing they support beyond the USD Preview Surface is a node to configure per Object subdivision.

Cycles in H18 with its custom OIDN implementation would be a nice option.
It used to take several years to mature a GPU engine, but with Optix, that's not the case anymore, you got an API that's hardware accelerated out the box. I dont see SideFX adopting Optix for Karma, they are probably gonna roll-their-own, which equals, years of R&D.
Redshift has a very mature Hydra Delegate, Juanjo is adding Hydra features weekly.
Honestly, my favorite Hydra Delegate is Storm, it supports the full USD Preview Surface spec and its USD GPU accelerated (the /stage is resolved on the GPU). Very fast viewport and instant rendering.
..and that brings me to my conclusion, I think the 2nd engine (beyond Storm) to support GPU USD acceleration will jump out into the lead in Houdini.

There was a problem with the first version of H18, that would switch back to non-commercial state, in error, but later (Daily Builds) of H18 corrected this problem.
I would suspect you are running the production version of H18 and that's why are you getting this error. I'd suggest trying one of the latest Daily Builds of H18.

RM23 is the reference implementation for LOPs, not Karma.
I haven't played with RM23 yet, but that'd be the Delegate I'd use for Final Rendering right now, Redshift3D being a close second.

…but getting a trial license to even work on Mint (Ubuntu) has been… fun
I never got it to work on Ubuntu 19, I figured it just didnt work on Linux. I can do a ROP render, but the Delegate would never load.
Did you ever got the Arnold Delegate to work?

I went down this path myself and settled on Ubuntu as it had the least amount of issues among the distros I tried.
There are pain points with all of the distros, but the increase in speed, and better RAM/VRAM usage is worth it.
It's a bit involved, I think, to get up and running, and I still dont have all my hardware drivers loaded under Linux.

Seems like Arnold is not playing well with other Delegates. I can get Arnold ROP to work while other ROPs are installed, but not the Arnold Delegate with other Delegates installed as well, on Linux.

Well, any help here would be appreciated. For example, ProRender installed fine, but, it auto-installed to the H version that existed on the system, so, when I installed another H version, ProRender was not available on the newly installed H version.
Secondly, Arnold Delegate would not work at all. The Arnold render engine worked, and I went on GitHub and some are loggin bugs against Arnold Delegate, so it obviously works on Windows OS, but not on Linux, where I've been testing.
So, anything we can do to standardize this would be great. Also, alot of Delegates support USDPreviewSurface, but there isnt an easy way to stand up USD shaders for external engines, besides authoring C++ code. Blender is really nice in this space, as you can author shaders in Python which allows very fast coding iterations when maturing 3rd party engine integrations.

Well, SideFX is creating a UE4 version 2 Houdini Engine upgrade, and I'd assume it would support the USD pipeline into UE4…or at least provide a road map from Houdini Indie into UE4.
