Theron is it the lack of information on the subject of character animation within houdini thats making you want to transfer your character back to max ?

I for one would love to see the expanded use of houdini I meet so many artists who look and hear of what it can do but it dies when they come accross how difficult it is to just do the smaller every day things … ie just trying to UV and pelt poly objects is a nightmare compared to other applications , for applications to be appealing they have to be attractive to different roles , unless that is Houdini wants to just be a specialist application with a tiny user base.
The blank slate is great , but the thing ive found the most fustrating is being able to do simple things. In many ways I know what I want to do I just lack the correct info on work flow tool options. More attention need to be given to documentation and tutorials to show this so people can get kick started . I would love to start assembling my own MR shaders or Renderman shaders but I have not got a clue where to start ………

Hi people,
This might sound a bit simple , but I am trying to change my JOB variable in Houdini under settings to D:\houdini\Houdini_projects instead of the default , but the execute button remains greyed out when I have pasted in the new path , so when I restart houdini it reverts back to the default JOB path.
I thought this would be the correct way of setting it up so I can quickly jump via JOB to save / open files. Or am I off the yellow brick road ?
also on a side note how do I print pages from the floating help ?

That looks like either you have a lighting issue or maybe you have added some reflection to your material ….check those values

I have been playing with Houdini since august , while working ( maya ). It certainly is different from other applications , and yes I do struggle sometimes with understanding the workflow. But saying all of the above, thats what sets it apart from all other applications. I liken it to being given the atomic building blocks of 3d so this means your only limited by your imagination and your knowledge.

Simon …. Sorry but I cannot get your idea to work for the polysplit SOP correctly. I create the loop , and check close for the last edge for the loop. It then snaps to the centre with the bias overide , when I begin to slide the loop , 2 points move in the opposite direction. Every time I create a loop the points that go in the opposite direction are different.
If anything I have found is that is far quicker and easier to model in another 3d package.I am no great user of Maya for modelling but it took me 2hrs from scratch to turn round what I wanted and Ive not really modelled anything major before in Maya. If side effects want to shift more seats of Houdini the modelling work flow and tools need to improve.

I'm a big dummy and don't even know what kind of graphics card
Right click anywhere on the desktop and select the properties tab under settings you will see what graphics card you have. Trying to run Houdini on a vista laptop with 1gig of ram and no doubt the graphics card sharing the ram will be so slow … I suggest you read up just how much ram vista requires to run, its not far off a gig ..

Glad you see it edward but then this begs the question how on earth can I slice up polygon model up with tapered areas ?. The model has already been made I just want to add detail. Seeing as there is no other tool for cutting up polys , ie no Knife tool , split edge ring tool. I used the tube as a simple example.

Using either quad or shortest distance I get the same error , the nearer the tapered end the more extreme the effect.

The polysplit SOP , with snap to perpendicular , cuts round a default tube SOP correctly , if you try the same again after tapering one end using a edit SOP , it will not cut a perpendicular line that will meet up as you cut round the tube.
does anyone else get this ? and is there a reason why ?

Hey jeff …..
Is there a difference between using CTRL 1 , 2 , 3 etc and space 1 , 2 , 3 etc to switch between viewports why the different methods
Of note also uncheck ( use res ) under the display tab if you want a image placing in the background

Wolfwood just off the top of my head , a polygon slice / knife tool would be nice to have for modelling.
If anything the one thing I want above all others is the ability to script ala maya …
