Hi, I've yet to model a character in Houdini but I really enjoy modelling props. It has all the right tools and even more
- here is a short tutorial I recorded modeling a Plant Pot in Houdini: http://vimeo.com/35814258 [vimeo.com]
- and here is an wip thread with a project I'm working on where modelling is done in Houdini 100% : http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=24368 [sidefx.com]
- also my entry for the cook off contest was entirely modelled in houdini: http://vimeo.com/28171054 [vimeo.com]
Anyway if you have any specific question about the modelling process let me know and I'll try to help

Thank you,
Glad you like it. I plan to do more of these small tuts as I advance with the short movie.

Hi all,
I recorded this short video tutorial creating a plant pot in SideFx Houdini.
It shows the modeling, the shading and a very basic rendering stage. It was a live recording and if sometimes it feels slow that's because I had to resize Houdini to 1280x720 and work in this small size = no fun.
It doesn't have any voice over but from time to time short tips are displayed on screen.
Watch it here: http://www.adrianlazar.com/2012/01/29/houdini-tutorial-creating-a-plant-pot/ [adrianlazar.com]
This plant is just one of the assets I am currently creating for Class Dismissed, a short film I'm making with a friend of mine.
Hope you like it and for more tutorials visit my Houdini Training page here: http://training.adrianlazar.com [training.adrianlazar.com]

You should describe a bit the scene you made. How many lights, what type of shadows, what renderer? And more importantly what's the effect you're having issues with.

Not much new on the 3d side since there is a crazy time at work but I wanted to share with you some character exploration that my fiend Mads Jakobsen is doing:

Noted, thanks for pointing that up. This weekend I plan to finalize the assets from this classroom but let's see how it goes.

Now that's interesting never thought of that.
Well the story takes place in ‘55 in a school from a small village and the first 3 quarters of the short are quite sad so we are looking for a colder feel. On the other hand we still want to make it visually apealing… I think it’s a delicate balance that we are searching for at this stage.

Thanks Rafael and sorry for the late reply, I was quite busy with the day time job
Anyways, here are more lighting/grading exploration. At the same time I'm working on creating new assets and refining the current ones.
I know it's not the usual workflow but since I'm the only one working on these parts I think it offers more flexibility and faster results

Hi guys,
Me and a friend of mine started working on a 4 to 6 minutes short movie. Houdini will be our main tool but Maya will also be used for rigging and animation.
The basic idea behind the short is a school day for a little girl that hates school After the storyboard is finished I'll show it to you guys.
Bellow you can see the first light explorations and grading tests for one of the locations. It's late morning, overcast with sunny spells. The overall mood of the image should be a little sad so no warm colours. Again, very early tests, the class is missing a lot of assets and most of them are still WIP, especially the shaders.
C&C more than welcomed!

Thanks for the explanations.
How is the merge node handling different render ranges? If I daisy chain together rops with different render ranges than all of them will use the range of the last one.

Many thanks James, yep works for my scene but still, looks like it could get complicated if you have a scene with many objects.
Hopefully SESI will add at some point a simple cast shadow toggle on the object render props… just like the phantom one.
Anyway, thanks again

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to make an object receive shadows but not cast them.
If I turn “phantom” on it will cast shadows but it won't receive them.
So basically if I have a sphere and a cube on the ground I would like the sphere to receive the shadow from the cube but it shouldn't cast it's shadow on the ground
Thanks,
Adrian

Thanks Rafaels. I'll make a render output for every take but it's going to be harder to manage, plus some have different frame ranges so that makes the workflow even more complicated.
I'm wondering how they do it in big productions

Hi guys, is there a way to render all takes one after another?
I have several takes and only one mantra render node and there's an option to render with current take or choose any but I can't find a way to make it render all takes.
Thanks,
Adrian
