Solaris and Karma » Issues with karma cryptomatte and import in cops

Hi. Are you referring to the checkerboard appearance? RGB channels are only for preview and uses checkerboard to indicate selection. Alpha channel contains the output mask. Please see https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/cop2/cryptomatte.html [www.sidefx.com] for more detail.

Hi. With the latest daily build (19.5.509 or newer), you can set environment variable KARMA_DICING_LEGACY to 0 to switch to newer dicing code that will help with visible discontinuity seen in the original post.
But no, karma currently does not support bump to roughness or displacement to bump (ala mantra).

Hi. XPU currently doesn't support background holdouts nor the built-in background plate material (which is VEX based).
You can see the list of currently supported for XPU here: https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/solaris/karma_xpu.html [www.sidefx.com]

Hi. Karma currently does not support category masks (or custom tracesets). Separate render passes may be the only workaround in this situation.
Solaris and Karma » Cryptomatte metadata problem

Ah, no I didn't change anything in the file, but I did render to mplay first, which wrote out the json file (that's most definitely a bug... rendering to mplay shouldn't write anything out). Rendering to disk indeed does not write out sidecar file, but that's because the "Sidecar File" parameter only takes in path relative to the exr file's output (so in your example scene should be just "sidecar.json", not "$HIP/render/sidecar.json"). We should be handling that more gracefully, or at the very least documented better.
Can you file a bug with a link to this thread? Thank you!

It seems fine on my end (I tried using Nuke 14.0, rendered using 19.5.435). Tried both sidecar manifest and embedded/metadata manifest. If you're outputting manifest as sidecar, you need to set "Manifest Source" on your Nuke's Cryptomatte node to "Sidecar" and select the sidecar file.
Also, just in case you're unaware, "Matte List" in Nuke's Cryptomatte node does not refer to every available IDs, but rather just your current selection. You need to use the picker and do ctrl-click on viewport to select IDs you want to generate matte for.

Could it be Nuke having trouble reading multi-part EXR format? Can you try adding "--exrmode 0" to husk command line to write in legacy EXR format and see if it helps?
Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Render Pyro-only with Karma

Hi. Karma by default uses "density" field to sample and generate shading points. Since your volume has no density, you should switch the sampling field to a different field that contains data (use Render Geometry Settings LOP to set "Volume Sampling Field" parameter to "flame" for example). You'll also need to assign a pyro shader in order to produce emission.

@jsmack did you mean "scope"?
Anyway, no, trace sets aren't supported in karma CPU/XPU yet.
Edit: actually it was pointed out to me that "categories" was indeed correct (more powerful and flexible replacement for scope). My apologies.

Technical Discussion » Karma slower (and noisier) than Mantra - PYRO VOLUME LIGHTS
- dlee

Hi. Karma's volume rendering is broadly faster than mantra, but volume lights may be faster in mantra: mantra's volume lights are a pointcloud-based approximation that produces very biased results. Karma aims to produce much more accurate results but it may come at an added cost.
In cases such as above where the volume is close to surface receiving emission, I might recommend disabling "treat as lightsource" entirely and rely on indirect bounces instead (and enable it in cases where the volumes are difficult/unlikely to be sampled by indirect rays, e.g. faraway sources or thin trails).

https://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/solaris/kug/lights.html#portal [www.sidefx.com]
Currently due to Hydra limitation "Portals" parameter on Dome Light doesn't get translated - instead you need to assign Render Geometry Settings LOP on your portal geometry (any polygonal mesh will do) and enable "Is Portal" toggle (under Light section).

Did you remember to enable "Allow Shader Parameter Animation" in your material library LOP? The exported material in your usd files won't have any time samples otherwise.

Hmm, I just downloaded and tried the production build of 19.5 (19.5.303) and it's working for me. Do you get an error? Is it an old scene? (if so, can you try creating a new Fog Box LOP, in case you unlocked the old definition with an outdated material)

tamte
how would one generate only deep opacity map, aka DSM?
which rendervar do I point DCM Render Vars parm to?
If you leave render vars field on Render Products LOP blank (or if you're using karma LOP, the DCM Render Vars field), it will only use opacity/Of channel.
