the syntax of ^!@att=1 to me is downright ludicrous…
If I want to test if something is X, I would test it in the positive…ie…are you X ?
It's silly to ask in the double negative like ‘Are you except not X’ ?
Not having a go at you, of course, but just commenting on the syntax ^!…..no it ain't ‘simple’…it's ridiculous

here you are…
(note I went by your title…not the EXACT details you've got in your steps. ie, if the selection area is > Threshold, then I delete them…I'm sure you can adapt the logic to your needs)

here's one way…
In the Y line to Helix, that's simply a Point SOP, in the VEXpression, if you click on the dropdown list, you'll see a bunch of presets, so I used Y line to Helix, which turns a line in the Y direction into a Helix….yes, I did this preset myself, very proud of the fact that SESI has implemented quite a few presets I put together here:
http://forums.odforce.net/topic/30324-vexpression-presets/ [forums.odforce.net]

well I've got a reply from SESI with bug ID 86810
what this tells me is there's a bug in PRE 16.5 !!
So in 16, you can immediately rotate the handle of the Env light, fine…set it to whatever, now if you enable Sky Env Map….the setting you just did 1 second ago snaps to the Sky Map…ie. you've just lost what you've laboriously (slight exaggeration here) setup…
So maybe the devs were trying to ‘unify’ this thing for consistency….and it leads to the problem in 16.5
who knows…

coz by definition….a box has 4 sides…in any software…
so say in Max, if you use a box…there's no settings for ‘Number of Sides’…sooooo, you use either a cylinder or an Ngon.
Same as in Houdini, you use a tube as suggested above…or a circle…then the world's your oyster

just in case ppl run into this issue, in 16.5 the Environment Light cannot be manipulated with the handle.
I've posted a workaround here:
http://forums.odforce.net/topic/32072-h165-environment-light/ [forums.odforce.net]
And yes, I've called the Ghostbusters…

so here's my way…it boils down to divide and conquer…or translated to: create a unit of something, clone it, offset it, radial clone it…whatever….it's just cloning…
I'm not a coder so cannot cram things into one wrangle…but for other non-programming ppl out there..you can look at my files here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/HoudiniArtists/permalink/1467625033353296/ [www.facebook.com]
step-by-step are pretty easy to understand…it's just cloning, offsetting…
(oh yes…mine produces points…so technically not a grid)

like this ? it's a simple proof of concept…but you get the idea…of course
it needs refinement so each letter rotates with pivot at bottom rather than centroid.
Then you'll also have to take into account letters like ‘p’ where the pivot would
not necessarily be at the ‘bottom’.

easiest way is to add Measure>Curvature.
Then Delete, Points, Delete by Expression: @curvature>5 (or whatever you see fit)
Points in a straight line would naturally have curvature = 0 so won't be deleted

simply download Apprentice, completely free, install.
You'd see it will install a help dir in: (by default)
C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 16.0.671\houdini\help
there you find txt and zip files…why not html ? dunno…
So what you have to do is fire up Houdini, hit F1, you'd see it pops up a window with the
following url http://127.0.0.1:48626/ [127.0.0.1] which is your machine…not the big bad internet…
Bob's your uncle…happy reading
And it even gives you sample scenes…just hit the launch/load button and start dissecting.
(Note: you need the internet to validate license when you install, but after that, if you don't
have internet access, Houdini would still start up…albeit a bit slower as it tries to search
for a connection…then you can read all the help you want)
