Yep … that's what I ended having to do. Though I'm still curious as why the builtin Pz ignores any matte shaded objects … SESI?

Is it expected behaviour for a matte shaded object to appear in a Pz image pass? I am using the builtin Pz option in the extra image plane of my ROP.

I am trying to install a python package called pyephem (http://rhodesmill.org/pyephem/) [rhodesmill.org] which will let my find the position of the moon / sun for a particular time / location.
I am using windows, and the package has a windows installer. This all works fine, except that it will not let me install it to the Houdini embedded python, instead it looks at the windows registry, and installs it to CPython25. I want to use it in houdini…
How do I install packages to Houdini embedded python? Or can I make Houdini use standard python on windows? Or do I have to compile the source code with the Houdini compiler?
You should be able to use this in Houdini if it's installed in the default location. You should be able to simply use the import statement, no?

Sometimes i can write the animated file to disk by running the animation.
Otherwise, i only can write it the only frame number where my obj sit on.
I wonder why ? Can any one help me ?
Steve
When you say ‘sometimes’ does that mean it sometimes works or the only way is to run the animation?
Can you send a simplified hipfile that recreates this problem?

First, let's clear some things up. The size difference you're referring to is the hipfile size - not the bgeo size. There is a difference. That being said, Houdini is known to occassionally become bloated … increase in size dramatically. There is a way to fix this but that's another thread. Having a hipfile of 12Mb is not that large so I doubt that is causing your render problems.
btw. when you say you can't render do you mean that mantra refuses to start or you're getting black images?
Second, to add uv & shop_material attributes just simply use UVTexture SOP & material SOP respectively before merging with the wings.

Rob

Hi
My bgeo file size changed to 12 Mb from 1.6 Mb of the original hip file.
I wonder because the enormous file size change causes some problem preventing rendering. Can any one help me ?
Steve
Like LFX, I was able to render the exact same thing before & after writing the geometry (sans textures). I don't understand what you mean between the two file sizes.
The only thing I can see that might cause issues is at the merge2 node. The wings have uv & shop_material attributes but the body doesn't. Try adding some to the body then merge and see what happens.
Good luck.
Cheers,
Rob

Hello,
I still have trouble in writing animated objs to disk (bgeo format).
Can you explain further ?
I tried to follow the instruction from houdini help posted.
I still do not know how to write to bgeo and to import them back to houdini scene. Would you help me further?
Steve
Inside the SOP network, place down a ROP Output Driver and connect the end of your chain into it's input. In the driver, specify the location of where you want to save your files (ie. /somewhere/mygeo.$F.bgeo) … make sure to use $F so it evaluates the data each frame. Additionally, specify the frame range you want then hit the ‘Render’ button.
Place down a File SOP and specify the path to where the files were saved … again making sure to use the $F variable. Make sure to toggle on the display/render flags of the File SOP.
Cheers,
Rob

Not bashing, just asking. I love Houdini! Especially now I know how to make renders just as purty as LW.
Rob K's the one who said everyone was going to drink and talk about how much Houdini sucks. ;D Blame him. Or blame Phunt.
Let's blame Phunt
Have a drink for me.

Not sure you can change the black colour for a mantra rendering. However, you can put an image in the camera's view … on the camera goto the View tab and put the filepath in the Background Image field. Make sure to toggle on the ‘Enable Background Image’ widget.

Sorry …. texture coordinates.
For each piece of geometry apply texture coordinates. One way is to use a UVTexture SOP. Then feed this into the input of a material SOP. Remember to do this for both pieces of geometry then merge them together.

Funny that vex & cvex were mentioned … last night I was trying to find documentation on these topics. The keyword ‘trying’.
So, I concur … these topics would be high on the list.

I want to be able to add/remove groups in a delete SOP using python.
Specifically, if I have two groups already specified in the parameter and want to add another, is there a function to do this? And vice versa … only remove a specific group from a list of groups?
Thanks in advance

Hey Kash,
Are you looking for the AttribTransfer SOP? You can pattern match the point attributes you want to copy.

aLs = a.evalParm(“picture”).split(“/”)
Though I haven't looked at this carefully enough, my first guess is the parameter … shouldn't it read:
aLs = a.evalParm(“vm_picture”).split(“/”)

H9.5
To prevent users from saving tools into custom shelves (and shelf sets), I need to change permission on the .shelf file so it's read-only. During a Houdini session, if I try to create a new tool in the locked shelf, a warning pops up saying:
Could not save some of the shelf elements to their definition files.
Cannot write to file ‘c:/temp/houdini9.5/toolbar/myshelf.shelf’.
Fine … nice to see a warning. However, when I hit OK, the window disappears & in the shelf is a new tool! When I quit Houdini, I look inside my $HOME/houdini9.5/toolbar/default.shelf to see that new tool. Worst of all, it's orphaned  Hmm … to me this seems very unlike Houdini to leave junk in a file. Is this suppose to happen? btw. when I restart Houdini, the new tool doesn't show up in the shelf (to be expected).
RFE: if a shelf is ‘locked’ then it shouldn't try to add tools anywhere … period. And I think I mentioned this before but I'll mention it again. Instead of chmod'ing a shelf file, should append a .nosave extension … like we do with desktops & preference files.
Cheers,
Rob

I have a pythonrc.py file that needs to do some stuff if Houdini is launched from an existing hipfile (ie. houdini <filename>). Is there a python command to check if the Houdini session was launched from hipfile or just typing ‘houdini’?
Thanks in advance
