Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Emit smoke continuously using volumes?

The answer to my question was to use source from object instead of smoke from object in the shelf. There may be a way to do this with smoke from object but I haven't figured it out yet

Was this done with particles or volume fluids?
If with particles, how did you transition from fire to smoke?
Thanks

Beautiful, thank you
I've been investigating how to apply two different shaders to this particle system based on their groups.
I notice that if I go to the SOP level and attach a material node to the POPNET, I don't see the group names coming through in the Group field of the Material node. I tried just typing in the group name from your example (group1) and the material node gives me an error
What is the correct way to apply a different material to different groups of particles?
Thanks again, this example is great.

Is it possible to create a continuous stream of smoke using volume smoke? Or would it be necessary to bring a flow of particles into a volune to achieve this?
Thanks

Hello
I'm trying to put together a particle system with a Popnet, a source, and a split. What I would like is for the source to emit particles by itself for a certain amount of time, and have the split kick in when the source particles have reached a certain moment in their life.
I would imagine the expression would have something to do with $LIFE, but I'm not sure how to go about it.
Any help most appreciated
Thanks
Alex

Hello
I've just created a custom shader using VOP Network and have saved it to my default gallery. It shows up in my material palette, but it doesn't have a preview. How do you create a preview for these custom shaders?
Thanks
Alex

So I tried creating POP groups within my POPnet, but no luck, I couldn't see them coming across in the SOP level.
I must be doing something wrong, as I have two group POPs branching out of my last node in the POPnet tree. They are assigned my existing POP groups. I tried to attach a combine node at the end of the tree, but i won't take two separate group nodes (or will but returns an error)
When I attach a material to the POPnet, no groups show up. Is there some other way to promote the POP level groups to SOP world? Or am I just missing a step?
Thanks
Alex

I'm interested in doing it with Particles to learn how to shade particles (but I'm also interested in shading volumes as a next step of my apprenticeship ).
I have a few tutorials about the Pyro solver, will see if I have time to learn it on this test.
I'm doing a class on Houdini at Gnomon in LA and I just need to master particles for now. The interesting thing is that we are using that exact rocket tutorial as a basis for the class (which is being taught in H10)
Thanks again for all the suggestions

Awesome, that is exactly what I need. I'd rather not work with sprite, but I might aswell learn them…

Thanks Jeff, I will work with that.
I'm looking for some good leads on texturing smoke and fire for a rocket blast off. Is there a good reference I could use?
Thanks again for the leads

So you mean that Pop groups are passed on to the SOP level? Do I need to create group operators at the Sop level or can I just used the groups that are created by POP nodes?
Thanks

Hello
I'm working on a blast off type effect where smoke and fire are coming out of rocket engine. I've got the particles setup the way I want them, but what I' having a hard time with the shading. I can shade the entire set of particles, but I have two groups in there, one for the fire, one for smoke. I'm not sure how to assign different materials to different groups within the POP context
Thanks

I'm bringing in some geometry I created in Cinema 4d and have a camera move I used in a previous part of my animation. Is it possible to translate C4d's camera move to Houdini? FBX export? What would be the workflow?
Thanks!

I'm trying to apply motion blur to particles. I have a Popnet that clearly has v properties, but when I copy spheres to my Popnet I notice that the v property does not go along, I need to use an attribute copy at the end of my network. Is this normal? Or am I missing a more elegant way of doing this?
Thanks

Yeah, but your topic specifically relates to character animation. In the case I was inquiring about he mentionned its use in basic modelling techniques for aligning objects

I'm going through “The Magic of Houdini”, Will Cunningham's book, and he mentions a “basic” practice which completely eludes me, and maybe is something that worked differently in previous versions.
To access Orientation picking he says to enter into “pose state” on a simple cube. I know I can access Orientation picking without any “pose” state. Is this obsolete or does it refer to some specific methodology?
Thanks

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Individual particle color

I don't think that is the reason, as the life expectancy of the particles is set to 200, and mostly because the color change happens even at the very beginning of the animation, I can almost see it happening on different facets of the sphere as it is emerging from the grid.
